Why This Must Be Read: So many authors (thankfully) have attempted to re-write the Heroes episode; this one accomplishes the task with originality using the characters and mythology of the Stargate universe. It is a satisfying read that lives up to the depth of characters portrayed in the show. One lives through the horror of a battlefield, the intensity of emergency medicine and the emotional rollercoaster that working in the SGC brings to each member of the team.

Why This Must Be Read: A Sam whumping fiction written by the Arcturus who clearly reigns over that specific genre. Janet and the team must rally together after a mission goes horribly wrong and Sam is left to face the consequences. Based on the mission to Netu and the pure evil that was revealed in that episode, SG-1 and Janet must rely on their individual strengths as well as their love for one another to move forward. This is intense but reveals the depths of friendship and love that the team has for one another.

Why This Must Be Read: “First Prime” is an exploration of an ‘alternate storyline’ where Sam gets left behind on her first mission (Children of the Gods). By the author’s own admission, he is a bit hard on Jack O’Neill in terms of revealing a ‘nasty’ side to his character. Regardless, it fits with an SGC that is much different than the series revealed due to this dramatic turn of events. Janet and Sam finally meet under much different circumstances. Finally, its sequel “Primal” is outstanding. Where many sequels fail to live up to their promise: “Primal” delivers. It reveals so much about Sam and Janet’s character, skill and need to survive. Enjoy!


Excerpt: Her arm shot out, grabbing him above the left elbow and twisting. Makepeace grit his teeth, but held his fire. She was looking at the patch on his shoulder, which showed the Stargate symbol for Earth. She blinked back tears, which were now cutting rows through the dirt caking her face. She released him and straightened her spine, staring him in the face. "My name is Samantha Carter. Formerly Captain Samantha Carter, formerly of SG-1," she said. Her voice cracked when she added, "Will you take me home?"

"What the hell were you thinking, Makepeace?!"

Hammond held up a hand to silence O'Neill, then turned to the leader of SG-3. "Colonel, I'll have to go with Jack on this one.     […….] "I recognized her, Sir. After she said her name. She was the first MIA officer for this command."

Jack's face was stone. "Captain Samantha Carter died under my command, Colonel Makepeace. She's KIA, not missing. Daniel and I barely escaped with our lives. If there was even the slightest chance she had survived, I would not have left her behind, do you understand me?"

"Colonel," Hammond said softly. "You have to admit, the... woman you brought back does bear a striking resemblance to our lost officer. And Dr. Fraiser has determined there is no sign of a Jaffa pouch or a Goa'uld presence."

Why This Must Be Read: This is a sweet and sexy story where Sam and Janet face a crossroad in their relationship as Cassie is feeling more secure in her home on Earth. Acknowledging that both of them cannot use Cassie as the only excuse to spend time together, Sam and Janet come to terms with the feelings that both have been harbouring for each other.

"I'm sorry, I guess..." Sam stumbled over the words. This was going to be hard. "I want you to tell me if I'm ever intruding."

Janet blinked. "Intruding?"

"Yeah, I mean, if you ever feel like I should go and leave you guys alone for a while, you can go ahead and tell me. Okay?"

"Leave us alone?"

Sam sighed. Ugh. She stiffened a little as Janet sat next to her. She wasn't sure yet how the words were going to come out and she hoped they weren't a total mess. "Now that Cassie's doing well and is growing up, maybe it's time I spend less time here."

Janet opened her mouth. "You want to spend less time here? I had no idea..."
