Why this must be read:

Sam thought about how Colonel O’Neill and Daniel had been acting. Daniel had said repeatedly that he loved her. The Colonel had said that he wanted her. That was quite a difference. In fact, it was a significant difference. She contemplated the implications of this observation

Unfortunately there is a bit of a tendency in the Daniel/Sam community to harshly criticise other pairings in fic to emphsis how great Daniel and Sam are together and this oftens means that fics are turned into condescending meta. Thankfully this fic is not one of them. The reasons that Sam has for choosing Daniel over Jack are wonderfully woven into the story line and make it seem very natural. It is also a very passionate story, without there being much more than kissing, which for me is a sign of great writing. Although there is a happy ending there is plenty of angst and drama along the way. Whilst this fic is kind of the Broca Divide part 2, it is still well worth reading

raindroproses shows how a chance encounter for Daniel and Sam turned into something more and helped them through their hardest and sometimes just plain boring moments. This really is the close friends from the early seasons just taking a break, with a hint of something more

Why this must be read:

Sam ignored them, part of her brain still processing the idea that her fellow geek in arms was kind of a hottie while the rest of it wondered if there was any way she could institute bathing suit day at the SGC.

A very funny and endearing look at the team during downtime at the beach, interacting with each other when the fate of the planet is not at stake. You get a glimpse at the friendship between Vala and Sam, where they just get to be girly best friends and the slightly goofy friendship between Cam and Sam. You also get to see that very rare creature of season 9 & 10, a relaxed and happy Daniel, which is nice, because I've missed him :) Some of the imagery from bathing suit day at the SGC will leave you not knowing whether to laugh or cringe or both!

A beautiful and heart-wrenching look at Daniel's thoughts after Absolute Power. He feels most guilty about what he did to Sam and how he used their relationship to try and manipulate her, but then because they know each other so well Sam wasn't going to fall for it. You also get a look at Daniel's thought process during this slightly AU version of Absolute Power and how he was trying to justify his actions. By the time you reach the climax of the story you feel that Daniel may never forgive himself but the last scene will leave you convinced there is hope :)

So why, oh why, have I decided to rec not just a story but a complete series you ask? Because I am absolutly crazy!

Honestly, I love this series, I love the characters, I love the story lines and plot. I love how everthing gets all twisted up together and it still makes sense!

This story is set post season 8 of Stargate SG1 and continues on as though seasons nine and ten never happened. We get a to see into a future that has the stargate program declassified and our beloved team shoved into the hungry jaws of the media. Meriem writes a very realistic view on the kinds of stresses that fame can place on the friendships between the team. And we're taken along for the ride as Daniel, Jack, Sam, and Teal'c just try to stay above water while they deal with the everyday issues of life mixed with political meddling and imperialistic attitdues Earth has towards the rest of the Milky Way Galaxy populations.

Why This Must Be Read:

M writes a particularly gritty, edgy brand of SG-1. If gritty and edgy are your thing, go straight to the fic and when you're done click the 'home' button at the bottom and read everything else she's written -- it's all fascinating, gripping stuff. If you're looking for J/D romance, you're not going to find it in this one; there's nothing soft or gentle here, and although one brush of near-tenderness stands out the more starkly for that, it's a fleeting moment in a harsh encounter. But the rewards in character insight are worth the pain -- and that the themes play out between Daniel and Jack isn't authorial whim or convenience. It's exactly how this story had to be told, and says a lot about the bond between them, whatever form it takes, even if it's the last strand of a fraying rope.

I especially love the resonance of the title, which evokes all the interpretive symbolism of the twelfth card in the major arcana of the tarot, and adds all kinds of layers to this portrayal of Daniel. It's a good name for the fic-as-fic, too: you can look at it right side up or upside down, and it'll always be looking back at you the other way.

About 5500 words, set sometime in Season 5.

surrealis takes us to the universe we saw in the episode 'Point of View' in this beautifully written fic. The Earth is practically destroyed, the remaining survivors are trying to build up society again. And Daniel Jackson has no idea about why his world has changed so much until one day Samantha Carter finds him. The author has a wonderful way with words, the romance is wonderfully written and the smut is very hot. Even if you are not usually into het or apocafics, give this a try.

Why This Must Be Read: Abyssinia does an amazing job of exploring four of Daniel's important relationships with women: his mother, Sha're, Sarah, and Sam. Each one is formative and important in it's own way, each one is given respectful and realistic treatment, each one is absolutely beautifully realized. This is a story like a tapestry, four threads woven together to make a picture. And while the picture is ultimately about Daniel, the other characters aren't there just to support him. All of the characters are vividly drawn. Well worth a read.

Why This Must Be Read:
This story is part of

synecdochic's Eurydiceverse- an accidental series; the one where they're all just a little not well. The author describes this story as semi-explicit because Sam's too much of a Good Girl to get as explicit as some of the E'verse stories. Plus, it's set in season 4, so they aren't yet as unwell as they will become.

What we have here is, yes, ultimately a coupling of Sam and Daniel, but there is so much going on both in the words and between the words I had to read this fic twice and I'm still sure I'm missing details.

synecdochic gives us a Sam who is learning to come out of her shell and into herself, learning to understand and ask for what she needs from men and a Daniel who is much more manipulative than Sam believes or lets herself see, but uses his skills only to give Sam what he knows she needs, and if she comes out better for it, he isn't going to regret his methods.

This whole story is a fantastic character study - a slow progression of the characters drawing to their inevitable conclusion, Sam being both honest to herself and yet lying to herself - seeing reality and yet twisting it around, seeing what Daniel's doing and yet not quite believing it because that would take Daniel off the pedestal she has him on. There's way more going on here than I can possibly explain, so I just urge you to go read. Possibly more than once.

I had assumed someone would have beaten me to this rec long ago, so I was shocked to find it had never been recced in either the "Daniel," "Sam," or "Sam/Daniel" categories. "Unreasonable" is a fantastic Sam Carter character study - a simple moment at home between missions has Sam thinking about the normal life she gave up on having in exchange for the exciting life she chose at SGC.

raqs explores the internal struggle Sam has between the desire for a normal life - a home and a husband and everything society says she is supposed to want - and the love she has for the life she lives and people she works with.

What follows is a wonderful conversation with Daniel that, yes, does lead to sex, but it's much more them acknowledging how deep their friendship is than it is a Sam/Daniel relationship and we watch Sam understand herself better, and also see Daniel and everything Daniel dreamed about and everything he's lost, and everything she has, even if it doesn't include a white picket fence.

This (along with

surreallis's Blue Jell-o Metaphor) is one of the seminal fics for me in terms of understanding who Sam Carter is inside her own head. Even if you don't read ship or sex in fic, I recommend at least reading the first half simply for the exploration of Sam.

nostalgia_lj has a special gift for -- well, she has many special gifts, but one of them is for understated creepiness. In this chilly little fic, the Asgard don't quite put Jack back right after "Lost City". Seen through Daniel's eyes, he's simultaneously utterly Jack and utterly ... something else.

Thor said that they'd have to keep Jack off Earth in case he broke it. Or rather, Thor said more eloquently, and Daniel subconsciously translated it into Jack. Jack is a language not easily learned by aliens, and Daniel has spent the last seven years running phrases back and forth because the literal translations would have got them kicked back through the 'gate.

sd_ficathon. The two of them get stranded off world in an awkward situation. Which leads to a few more awkward situations as the plot and their relationship progresses. And they act like real people, a real couple. One of the highlights of this fic is that they actually argue, and that is kind of a rare thing to find in S/D fic.

The core of this fic is their friendship, so even if you don't ship them you'll probably still enjoy this.

Told from Daniel's perspective, it has perfect characterisation of all characters, great insight into the relationships between not only Sam and Jack, but also the rest of SG-1 (Sam and Daniel in particular) and is very cute (for the Sam/Jack) while at the same time remaining sad for what used to be between Sam and Daniel. A must read for every Sam/Jack (and even Sam/Daniel) fan.
