Haunted

Why this must be read:

Though more of an AU get-together/horror story, what grabbed me in Haunted was the humor and hijinks between John and Rodney.  I had to control my giggles to keep from waking up my sis in the next room over during their interactions. I especially loved their stake-out in the hallway outside Madison's bedroom for her "ghost". The way these two played off each other was fantastic! So add this to a sweet get-together and a somewhat creepy horror story and this made for a very nice diversion for an evening.

Story Summary: Rodney and his niece Madison buy an old manor in the small town of Origin, which the locals believe to be haunted. And it most definitely is.

Summary: A Wraith is loose in Las Vegas, and when the Atlantis team stumbles across a couple of detectives already on the case, two guys who ride around in a ’67 Impala and look nothing like local PD, they quickly come to the conclusion that life would go a lot more smoothly if they all just worked together. But things are crumbling around them fast, the ground slipping away beneath their feet, and it forces both John Sheppard and Dean Winchester to the same eventual realization: it’s time to stop lying to themselves, once and for all.

Why This Must Be Read: This is a fantastic story for many reasons. One of them is the developing friendship and understanding between Dean Winchester and John Sheppard. Another is the development of the romantic relationships on two slash fronts in both fandoms. John Sheppard and Rodney McKay finally get with the program and, for the angelically inclined, Dean Winchester finally figures out this thing between him and the angel Castiel. If you don't know Supernatural I definitely rec this anyway because the author provides a cheat sheet for each show at the beginning that will get you up to speed.

Furthermore, there are other bits that will make you smile. Like the camaraderie that develops between Teyla and Sam. Due love is given to our entire team and our Supernatural players and it's all set against an awesome plotty backdrop.

In the end, I hope you're as excited for the upcoming sequel as I am!

Why This Must Be Read:

The author plays with perceptions in this story; how we perceive ourselves and others, how others perceive us. John and Rodney are sent on a dangerously frivolous mission by Elizabeth on Halloween and, along the way, they learn important things about themselves and each other.

Oh, and there's candy and scary monsters.

And a clown, but he's not scary. Honest.

Why This Must Be Read: This riveting drama reads like a classic horror movie: the broken-down car on a stormy night, the strange small town in the back of nowhere, the two hapless scientists stalked by terrible evil...

Only in this case, the victims in question are Daniel Jackson and Rodney McKay.

These scientists fight back.

Creepy and evocative, with great insight into Daniel's character and an excellent portrayal of McKay, this story will grip you and leave you looking over your shoulder. Eerily, frighteningly good.

Superbly written, fabulous team interaction, and deft use of modern mythology - all here, and terrifyingly good.

Why This Must Be Read: Cocytus is an evocative, original and horrific story with enduringly haunting imagery. Its such a memorable story that I see it described frequently on storyfinders. It is the stuff of nightmares and will stick with you. I won't spoil it beyond the brief summary that the team are stunned such that they appear dead and awaken in a place that Ronon and Teyla know only from the Pegasus equivalent of urban legends. Although all four's perspectives are strongly written as they figure out where they are, what's happened and how to escape, Teyla's shines. She is incredibly strong, smart and unflinchingly brave but remains endearingly vulnerable and empathetic. Stories like this remind me just why I love her character.

Why This Must Be Read:
Halloween is my favourite season: the chill in the air, the golden leaves and long shadows, the dead coming back to haunt us.... It's a Ray Bradbury season, so what better way to finish off my recs 'o' horror and mystery than with the carnival coming to Atlantis in the middle of the night? The supernatural-or-is-it element is very well balanced, the humour hits in all the right places, and the demon (or Ancient) in the schoolroom is marvelously creepy. Rodney having to deal with the supernatural is sort of a personal kink of mine: it's so distateful to him. Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween! And what better to celebrate the holiday than a nice, long, creepy and suspenseful action-adventure story? John and Rodney find themselves trapped on a planet with a malfunctioning stargate (like they so often do), fighting for survival against a real live monster--and then things get weird. A couple of cool twists make this story much more than a simple h/c romp (though there is some delicious Sheppard-whump, if that's your cup of tea); the exploration of the characters, and their relationship, is intense.

Why This Must Be Read:
I have a real fondness for outsider POVs, where the story is told from the perspective of someone outside of the relationship. In this story, that's key, as the outsider is a woman who can give us the background on the SF/horror set-up and give us the world context for what is going on. So the story isn't up close and personal to the feelings and emotions of the series characters, but there is a lot of emotional intensity brought to the story though the POV character.

Summary: John scooted closer, resting his head on Rodney's shoulder. There was something very right about this. But then again, maybe it was just the moons. Freedom, too, was unfamiliar. Post-apocalyptic version of 'Lady and the Tramp.'

Why This Must Be Read:

Yes, this is another rec for a story by Gaia. It is deserved. This story made me shiver, it's creepy and scary. The ending left me breath- and speechless. The characterization is very fitting and the world she builds seems very real. I don't want to give away too much of the plot and its twists and turns, for most of the 'fun' is figuring out what is going on.

Author's summary/epigraph: cuts and dents, they catch the light

Why This Must Be Read:

There are so many things it's tempting to compare a Kres fic to -- a cryptogram, a crossword, a neural net, a Rorschach test, a Rubik's cube, a Möbius strip, a sestina -- but the one I keep coming back to is: a human brain with its convolutions of tissue and webs of synaptic connections and washes of neurohumors. Her narrative works the way the mind works when it's dreaming, creating, solving a puzzle -- feeling, sensing, making connections on levels deeper than linear surface thought.

This one, like her tour-de-force triptych Pick Up Here / And Chase the Ride / Find the River, is classic SG-1 offworld adventure twisted and folded and spindled Kres-style. Set 'somewhere near season 4, back when Daniel was still quite a gentle soul,' it's about a planet, and what they find there, and what happens to Daniel and Jack there, and what happens between them afterward -- presented in a temporally layered, non-linear narrative that makes the mystery more tantalizing and creepy and disturbing and the resolution all the more satisfying. It's a dark, visceral story, as much psychological horror as science fiction, but it's very much a love story; the team and Hammond and the SGC are enjoyably present, but it's very much a Jack/Daniel fic. About 18,000 words.

Full disclosure: I beta'ed.

Why This Must Be Read: Late at night, a tired Carson finds himself following an enigmatic figure through the hallways of Atlantis—while the situation grows increasingly frightening and then dangerous. Murron paints a memorable portrait of Carson and how he grapples with the terrors around him. Along the way, we catch revealing views of John and Radek as well, and a few brilliant glimpses of Rodney. The Ancients and the city of Atlantis itself have their roles to play as well. Murron crafts a deeply involving story with striking images and a wide range of allusions, lending the story a rich texture.

“Fearless” is not only an outstanding Carson story but also simply an excellent Stargate: Atlantis story. Set aside some time to read it—I found the suspense so great I couldn’t wait to read the separate parts and had to read them one right after the other!

Why This Must Be Read: Julie Fortune's fics always carry a heavy impact. This one blew me away.

SG-1 gate to an ice planet and plunge, quite literally, into disaster. When what ought to be a routine rescue fails, Sam and Teal'c are forced to retreat to the Gate for help while Jack and Daniel struggle with injuries and hypothermia. With the SGC in lockdown and something deadly waking up beneath the ice, how can Sam and Teal'c get to Jack and Daniel in time?

Tok'ra cold-blooded pragmatism goes head-to-head with SG-1 loyalty and loses miserably; Jack and Daniel make the ultimate emotional sacrifice and give up their most cherished pasts for each other's lives; and the reader comes away from this amazing story with the mental shakes and a burning need to read everything else Julie has ever written.

Why This Must Be Read: I see a lot of differing characterizations of John in fic, and sometimes they jibe with what I was thinking and sometimes they don't, not without a lot of mental work. This John, though, is so spot-on it's disturbing; this story is about what happens when you do when you're not yourself and how you live with it when you come back, and watching John try to come to terms with what he's done and do the right things to make amends even when he's not at all sure how much of it is memory and how much of it is dream rings so true.

I won't lie to you; this story is not for the faint of heart. But it is an amazing piece of psychological horror, vaguely reminiscent of Heart of Darkness; Mistah Kurtz, he dead, and the author peels back one layer of "normal" at a time, through dreams and half-remembered moments and things John doesn't understand, until the realization at the end makes perfect sense and fits so neatly and seamlessly into everything we know of the characters.

Daniel tries to find peace in the aftermath of "Absolute Power" and "The Light". Unfortunately, he goes looking for it in the most dangerous city in America.

Why This Must Be Read:

I decided to go on a search for Stargate/Sentinel crossover stories and found this one. I'm not one for crossover fic but this is one of the best I have read. There are some disturbing scenes in it that deal with the supernatural but overall the story is a very enjoyable read. Without giving much away...

Daniel goes on the run fearing that if he stays at the SGC bad things will happen. While on the run he is being pursued by both SG-1 and the NID. When he stumbles into the town of Cascade he runs into a man who dislikes him at first but then helps him out of a dangerous situation. After offering Daniel a place to stay things heat up as the NID begin closing in and soon it becomes a race against time. Who will get to Daniel first? The NID or the SGC? Enjoy!
