cuts and dents, they catch the lightWhy This Must Be Read: There are so many things it's tempting to compare a Kres fic to -- a cryptogram, a crossword, a neural net, a Rorschach test, a Rubik's cube, a Möbius strip, a sestina -- but the one I keep coming back to is: a human brain with its convolutions of tissue and webs of synaptic connections and washes of neurohumors. Her narrative works the way the mind works when it's dreaming, creating, solving a puzzle -- feeling, sensing, making connections on levels deeper than linear surface thought.
This one, like her tour-de-force triptych
Pick Up Here /
And Chase the Ride /
Find the River, is classic SG-1 offworld adventure twisted and folded and spindled Kres-style. Set 'somewhere near season 4, back when Daniel was still quite a gentle soul,' it's about a planet, and what they find there, and what happens to Daniel and Jack there, and what happens between them afterward -- presented in a temporally layered, non-linear narrative that makes the mystery more tantalizing and creepy and disturbing and the resolution all the more satisfying. It's a dark, visceral story, as much psychological horror as science fiction, but it's very much a love story; the team and Hammond and the SGC are enjoyably present, but it's very much a Jack/Daniel fic. About 18,000 words.
Full disclosure: I beta'ed.
( two excerpts (it's a longish fic) )
