Why This Must Be Read: We're fans of a science fiction show, and it's only relatively rarely that the fanfiction reflects that--a lot of the fanfic could take place in an office or a lab or a military base, not necessarily in another galaxy (and, with all the SGA AUs out there, a lot of times even the pretense of a sci-fi show is dropped). This story doesn't let you forget that our heroes are ( inhabiting a sci-fi world... )

Besides the SF flair, this is a moving, character-driven story about the nature of self. I loved how this story explores the relationship between the four Season One team members.

Why This Must Be Read: I don't usually enjoy either first person fanfic (I am weird that way) or sex-in-really-inappropiate-situations, but I immensely enjoyed reading this fanfic. Vala's characterization is well-done and the set-up is very nice.

Set after Camelot and before Flesh and Blood, we witness teh fight between the Ori and this galaxy's ships through Vala's eyes. Sam is captured and brought aboard the Ori main ship...

Why This Must Be Read: This is the first McKay/Dex story I ever read and I have found that Hth captures the dynamics of the two characters, giving the idea of this pairing a level of believability that I wasn't expecting going into the story. I will read almost any McKay pairing once, he is my character of choice for Atlantis, but there are only a few pairings I actively seek out. The remainder tend to only be if I stumble across them. This author, this story put McKay/Dex on my actively sought list.

The premise of the story is simply really, Rodney and Ronon bond over the expected for them, food. Rodney kind of misses the significance of the bonding, but it will all work out in the end. A typical plot line brought to life in an extraordinary way. The story itself can be a stay alone or seen as a prequel/prologue to In the Hands of Yes.

Why This Must Be Read: The team is exhausted. Burnt out. So Jack decides to persuade Hammond to order them to take leave. Together. To recharge. Without the other three members of SG-1 knowing about it beforehand right until after Jack has managed to pile them all into a Cadillac and drive them off into the unknown...

'Road Trip', as the author puts it, has no aliens and no big battles. But it gives a glimpse of an SG-1 stripped down to four individuals without their usual professional accoutrements and coming together again as four friends getting to know each other outside of work. Many accidental things happen along the way as they embark on their one-week road trip. The team visiting the Grand Canyon is one. The changed nature of the relationship between Daniel, Jack and Teal'c is another. They get into their share of scrapes and brawls and Sam learns to lose the rigid military facade that has governed her interactions most of her adult life.

Of all of Jack's usual harebrained schemes in trying to get the team to chill out and have fun, this is, imo, one of the best.

Why This Must Be Read: Written for atlantisbasics, this story is lyrical and soothing. As one of my friends put it, "It makes me feel quiet inside."

"The Boy Who Didn't Need Stories" is a gorgeous piece of work, with plenty of fascinating back-story about Radek and communist-controlled Czechoslovakia. It is definitely worth a read. And maybe one or two (or three) re-reads.

Why This Must Be Read: At the end of "The Hive" I was a little disappointed that there was no scene with the team that addressed the point that Rodney was back in Atlantis. No one asking why he was there and no still on the planet with Ford's men. We are given no idea what, if anything, they were told about Rodney ODing on the enzyme. Lacey McBain filled that gapping hole very nicely with a well constructed short story that was satisfying and kept true to how an exchange between McKay and Sheppard would likely go.

Why This Must Be Read: This Lacey McBain fic is a continuation of the other "The Hive" related story I recced. This story gives the reader insight into Sheppard's reactions when he finds out exactly what actions McKay took to get back to Atlantis, something I, as a viewer, was disappointed to find missing from the episode itself. I was left feeling the episode was incomplete. The great thing about finding the ending in the fandom is getting it explored through the slash slant which we are likely to see on the show itself.

Sheppard thinks he'll have to invent some things when he leaves here, because people want to hear Antarctic stories about penguins and towering icebergs. They don't want to hear about being torn between the Sam Adams and the Bass Ale for your Friday night six-pack.

Why This Must Be Read: I couldn't believe I didn't find this already recced along with the other genrecs. This was one of the stories that sucked me in to SG-1 fandom as a reader. It's a story about SG-1 at the very beginning of their adventures, in their first month together, just learning to become a team. Jack has invited his proto-team to dinner to "bond" and ( sees his mistake… )

The team runs into hard evidence that the Goa'uld aren't the only danger out there in the galaxy, and--with Jack O'Neill's life on the line--they pull together to save the day, showing all the elements of the famous, world-saving team they'll someday be.

Rheanna has a lovely O'Neill voice, and she draws all the other early Season one SG-1 characters, as well as Dr. Fraiser and General Hammond, with a caring and loving eye and a wonderful ear for their voices.
