Why This Must Be Read: A gorgeous exploration of "what if" Jack and Daniel were to go along with the happily-ever-after expectations of others, society and maybe even themselves. Both men go into their respective marriages with blind spots that do no one any favors in the long run. The story is set in the indeterminate future when Jack retires, and is constructed with alternating scenes set during that time and a few years later. There is plenty of angst to go around in both timeframes. The situations are treated as gently and respectfully as possible, but the dashing of illusions by real life is still painful. For the Jack/Daniel fan, though, the ending is slasher canon.

Hello. This is my first time reccing, so apologies if I don't do this correctly. I'm also starting with a toughie, as this story has two versions. A gen version and a Sheppard/Weir version. That will make this a little complicated. o_O

Rec Category: Elizabeth Weir

Pairing: Two versions of the story: Gen (pg-13) and Shep/Weir (R)
Categories: gen either/or Sheppard/Weir, (a touch of Cameron/Weir UST if you squint) AU, drama, angst, SG-1/SGA crossover
Warnings: character death (sorta), and for the S/W version, smut.

ALTERNATE S/W VERSION (R): Prologue I Part I I Part II I Part III I Part IV I Part V I Part VI

Why This Must Be Read: This story is awe-inspiring. Irony_rocks creates a completely fleshed out and believable Alternate Universe that's sorta based on Heroes, The X Men, and The X Files all rolled into one. Basically, it's a Mutant AU. Elizabeth is a telepath. John can transform into the creature he was in Conversion. Rodney can control Water. Ronon is basically Wolverine. And Teyla's gifts are apparently numerous. You've even got Carson and Radek making their presence known, and a few SG-1 notables (mainly Cameron) showing up.

It's from Elizabeth's POV, but Irony_rocks does a great job of including every one and there's significant character moments and developments for each of them. Although Elizabeth takes center stage, everybody from Carson to Teyla to Rodney and John gets several moments to shine in this story. I'm of the mind that there aren't enough stories from Elizabeth's POV, and few that can capture her strengths and insecurities so well. Adding to the fact that this is an AU and I still recognize her voice easily, this story really is a must read for any fans of Elizabeth. She's a little wounded, a little sad, but still strong.

I also like to think it's a must read for any fans of AU's, because the premise is wonderful and flushed out. Genesis is the first installment of an on-going series, and the community is open to all who want to write for it - any pairing/rating.

Like I've stated above, there are two version. I am not a Sheppard/Weir, but I read both versions and each has their own strengths. Both focus on all the characters equally, and the gen version has nothing but friendship vibes between S/W (except for a slight Kirk moment when they first meet). The Sheppard/Weir version is hot. Quite possibly the hottest smut scene I've ever read. For that alone, this story is worth reading.

*Disclaimer: I helped Irony_rocks brainstorm for this AU. Doesn't undermine this rec at all because it's still an awesome story.

Why This Must Be Read:

This is brilliant. Not only is it a roll-around-on-the-floor inducing fic; it has at its heart something very poignant if you're a fan of Battlestar Galactica.

And in less than 200 words!

Why This Must Be Read: Quite possibly one of my favorite Daniel/Vala stories ever. Set in Season 10, Daniel is late coming home from off-world and the rest of the team is left to worry over the possibilities of what may have become of him. Sam, Mitchell, Teal'c, and even a visiting Jack all gather around Vala as a support system. This is a great take into the minds of each of the characters, and the original ending leaves it to stay true to canon. However, [livejournal.com profile] thalion_pip also wrote an alternate, shippy ending as well, which is also wonderful. Definitely worth reading!

Absolute / Better To Light A Candle (link also included at end of first story)

Why This Must Be Read: Redbyrd neatly puts her episode tags for Absolute Power and The Light together to form a long, fascinating whole. First, there's an intensely satisfying post-episode debriefing after Shifu's departure from the SGC, told from Jack's POV, complete with a Daniel who puts two and two together to get twenty-five and soundly puts Aldwin in his place. Then, as Daniel still struggles with the implications of Shifu's dream, he accompanies SG-5 to P4X-347… and, as the events of The Light unfold from Daniel's POV, we're treated to some excellent insight into Daniel's mindset and his desire to bring his relationship with his teammates back to normal.

By the time Redbyrd is done, the members of SG-5 have developed into characters so real and recognizable that you'll be astonished to remember that the only one we actually met was Barber - and that was only in the teaser, when he committed suicide. There is, as can be expected from a Redbyrd fic, lots of extra details and scenes that enrich the episode we saw onscreen, including the exchange where Jack and Daniel make their bet about whether or not Sam would agree to come to the planet. And then there's the final resolution: the discovery of Loren's homeworld, the tightening of bonds of friendship, and Daniel's quiet acceptance of who he is and what he is doing with his life.

There are hundreds of ep tags to The Light. Redbyrd's retelling is definitely one of my favorites!
