This story is written as an alternate to synecdochic’s Freedom’s Just Another Word For Nothing Left to Lose. And while it isn’t necessary to read Freedom’s Just Another Word to understand this story, even mrshamill encourages you to.

 

Speaker touches on a number of sad possibilities for what could happen to Atlantis in the future and the possible escapes that our heros might make given these circumstances. The story itself is powerful and touching. It tugs that the right emotional strings and leaves you with an ache around the heart, because you can feel the overwhelming sadness throughout. The characterization is spot on and you never mistake the characters for anything other than what they are.

Why This Must Be Read: Set in the first season, this is more of a Teyla-centric story than it is a story about their relationship but I found it a very interesting read. As part of a strange ritual, John and Teyla end-up sort of re-enacting a legend of two lovers but there's more to the legend and the ritual than they thought, and we end up with John in the brig and Teyla in the infirmary but with the rest of the gang's help, everything is resolved and we have a very apologetic John and forgiving Teyla at the end. I really liked the premise and execution of the story and the characterization is very much in tune with what we know about their personalities.

Why This Must Be Read: I don't think I"ve ever seen fanfic related to Guy Fawkes Night before, but I like this one. This story melds Teyla/Elizabeth and Sam/Vala and shows all four women becoming more intrigued with each other. I like stories that have subtlety in them, rather than going right for the smut. (OK, I like those too.) This is a nice example of a short character vignette.

Why This Must Be Read: This story has to be read because even though it isn't long, it had everything. It has the sweetness, the snark, the hair comments, and all the love that is Rodney and John, with a dash of Ford. In this story, they're high school teachers and who wouldn't want these two to teach them. There's also the bonus of a lunch room kiss.

Why This Must Be Read: Firstly because this is forcryinoutloud and her fics are absolutely brilliant. Secondly, because this is one of the best AU's I have ever read.

The story tells of John Sheppard, a million heir who has never worked a day in his life and is bored. He goes to see a shrink recommended by his friend Lorne, who tells him that he should work for a year, and not use anything of his money. He bets the therapist 50.000 dollars that he can do it, which he then proceeds to do with the words:
“I’m leaving, disappearing for one year—I have a wager to win, and a theory to disprove.”

Of course, during this year he meets Rodney and falls head over heels.

The story have a brilliant mix of angst, drama, fluff, humor, romance and every other thing you could want. And as the story progresses, John turns into another human being whom you grow to like. If you're not a big fan of AU's, this story should be read just because of the lovely style of writing that forcryinoutloud has.
