Daniel's deteriorating relationship with Jack prompts him to take a leave of absence from the SGC.


Why This Must Be Read:

I read this when it was originally posted in the zine "Foundations 1" and was both moved and impressed with it. Daniel and Jack's friendship has been falling apart and after the events on Edora Daniel decides that it's time for him to take a leave of absence and "clear his head". When Jack hears of the leave of absence he becomes angry, enraged and physically aggressive towards Daniel solidifying Daniel's need to get away for a bit. After Daniel leaves both he and Jack have plenty of time to think about their lives and what went wrong. In the end both men come to realize they truly need each other and must mend the nearly broken friendship before it's too late.

ADMIN: Mid-Month Mod Post

Just a few things. Nothing really major, but important just the same.

I had a request, and it is *just* a request, that when you rec a fic, make sure to describe it a bit in the 'Why This Must Be Read:' section of the rec. Remember, this is where you 'sell' the rec to everyone. So whatever you can do to draw people to the fic is a good thing!

I am a bit... astonished... at the number of categories that have volunteers for this month and still no recs. We are WAY off the mark for mid-month! Ten of our twenty-four volunteers have still not put up a single rec! Do NOT wait for the end of the month! Since this is mid-month call, if you haven't put up a rec for your category yet, please try to do one by the end of the week. A lot of popular categories still have no recs, and I'd like to see a few of them going as soon as possible!

Lastly, we are adding a new category. It's because of me and my sense of organization really. For pairings, I would like to keep those recs strictly 'ship in nature. Therefore, [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] has been asked to create a new category under Friendship. It will be Friendship: Other and that is where you will sign up to rec friendship fics. So if you want to rec, say, Sam and Janet friendship fics, you'll sign up there for a month of 'Sam and Janet Frienship'. That way the 'Sam/Janet' pairing category will be strictly for femmeslash stories concerning them in a relationship that is more than simple frienship.

Why This Must Be Read:

This story is a missing scene that falls between the start of season 10 and "The Pegasus Project". Vala isn't yet officially on SG-1. In order to get on the team she has to go through several "training missions". On one of these training missions the unexpected happens and SG-1 is required for a search and rescue mission. During the mission Daniel is injured and Vala is told to stay with him and take care of him. She is left with a set of instructions to follow and helps nurse Daniel back to health.

The story shows more of the interesting connection/bond forming between Daniel and Vala in season 10. They still argue and conflict but throughout the nursing of his injury both Vala and Daniel learn a bit more about one another and in the end Vala becomes more ingrained into SG-1. The story also shows the bond of team and friends forming and growing. There are some nice bonding moments and team moments balanced with some humor that makes this story both interesting and enjoyable to read.

Why This Must Be Read: Simply put, it's one of the most beautifully-written baby!fics that I've ever read in any fandom. It's not nauseating in its fluff level - I think it captures perfectly the awe of a new father over his child and it does it without diminishing John Sheppard's individual reaction in any way. It's descriptive without being boring, and it is really lovely. John and Elizabeth are married with a new daughter, and the baby's father takes some time to get to know his little girl some days after her birth, while her mother's still asleep.

But then another part of him knows. Knows why he’s suddenly fallen prone to thinking of stars and sparkles and softness and light. Knows exactly why he’s sitting by the window at six in the morning, relinquishing sleep to hold the little bundle in his arms while he still can.

I haven't seen these two recc'd yet but I find anything done by Redbyrd needs to be read. "Performance Reviews" is about Daniel and SG3 going before General O'Neill who reviews the performance of them during the episode Prometheus Unbound. And Daniel explains why he doesn't date crazy people.

He thought about Jackson's list of women to avoid. "So what do you do if you want a date?"

Jackson's eyebrows rose. "In the abstract, you first ascertain that the woman in question is human, not a Goa'uld, not possessed, not a murderer, criminal, insane, NID agent, reporter or agent of a foreign power trying to collect intelligence," he said. "Then you're good to go. If you're asking how *I* get a date, I don't. I go save the world or find something interesting to translate until the urge passes. It's a lot less complicated."

"Training Exercises" is Daniel's and SG3's punishment. And a life long lesson of Never Underestimate the Archeologist

Why This Must Be Read: Don't you want to find out what Samantha does? After the events of "Shifting Views" Samantha returns to her reality and sets out to track down Colonel Janet Fraiser. This story is really well written and develops Samantha and Janet's relationship nicely. Plus, Janet as bad ass military lady? That rocks.
