Why This Must Be Read: Yes, Sheppard is a major in the USAF at the start of the series and has to have had at least a little command experience, but he's been almost completely removed from the normal chain of command by the time we meet him in Rising. At this point in his life, on the downside of his twenty years, one can assume that he's come to terms with never being the one in charge, with never having to be the one in charge, the one who has the final say and complete responsibility for the people under his command. So when everything changed and he became the Man, how would he deal with it?

Why This Must Be Read: One of the things about the show that annoys me is the fact that it's pretty xenophobic for a science fiction show. If the writers were doing it for anything other than laughs about naked aliens from twelve-year-old boys, I would be fine with it just being another one of those flaws that our very imperfect heroes seem to have. But they don't, and it really (obviously *g*) annoys me. So when I find an author who can take an aspect of the show that I don't like and turn it completely on its head and make me laugh really hard--well, then. *g* Rodney and John's snarking is pitch-perfect, and, wonder of wonders, the characters grow (John especially) past their starting point at the beginning of the story. Plus, the titular alien is hilarious.
