If you use the direct link to the story, Chapter Five will not show up. If you use the link to the site instead and stay within the frames, you will be able to see Chapter Five. I don't understand the technical aspects of this, but there's some glitch that occurs--at least with my browser. Why This Must Be Read: This episode tag for
The First Ones is actually five meaty chapters long. It begins just at the end of the episode and continues until the point where everyone is pretty much safe. This story sticks to canon as far as what happened in that episode, so character deaths that occurred in the story will be referred to and, in some cases, dealt with. It also deals with many of the things we didn't see in the episode:
How did Daniel feel about the death of Rothman? Who told him? How did he find out? How did Jack, Sam, and Teal'c know whether or not Daniel had a "snake in his head"? Through this story, we get to "see" SG-1's journey back to the base camp and find out what happened to some of the other missing SGC personnel.
This is a very well-crafted and well-written story, as all fics by Jb are. The story adds to the episode in a very plausible way and fleshes out what we were left to guess at. The characterizations in the story are well done. Teal'c is a little stern, but with good reason. All the team is included and no one is villified or portrayed in an unflattering light.
This is a very angsty story without a great deal of comfort throughout the story, but the comfort that is included is well worth the read. There's a little bit of Sam caring for Daniel, and there's a fantastic Jack & Daniel scene near the end. The author manages to pack a whole lot of emotion and caring in that one little scene with Jack & Daniel sitting next to each other (no hugs or anything) than they've managed on the show in the last six seasons. While this is a very angsty story, it has as happy an ending as could be expected given the circumstances of the episode. It's not an overly dark fic that will depress you (at least in my opinion). It's more the kind of story that leaves you wanting more.
