Author’s Summary: “A varying look at three major relationships of Vala's and how they changed drastically after a first date. Each chapter set in an alternate universe. The first story in a series of eight.”

So, Shiggityswha is primarily a Vala/Cam writer, and she is critical of the canon Daniel/Vala relationship, for reasons that I largely agree with. One of the best parts of fanfic, in my view, is that the best fandoms have canon source that leaves open multiple perspectives. But! I am rec’cing Daniel/Vala, and this one is a bit different, but I urge you to give it a try. It’s a series, Vala-centric, and each fic has three chapters. Each chapter is a separate timeline, involving Vala and a relationship with a different lover--Cam, Tomin, and Daniel, and includes the theme of children/family--a theme that was pursued (in my view) incompletely on the show (in terms of Vala, at least). So, the first timeline (chapter one of each fic) follows Cam and Vala, the second Tomin and Vala, and the third Daniel and Vala. For the Daniel/Vala, I suggest the second timeline (I promise, it will make sense). The third, which is Daniel/Vala, is a much darker (but not implausible) view of their relationship.

Shiggity’s fic is darker, and the characters are complex. Her understanding and characterization of Vala, though, is fantastic. One of the reasons I love this pairing so much is because of Vala: she is a strong, fascinating, complex character, and because she is also an unreliable narrator in terms of her own character, her story has infinite possibilities. I find this series both thought-provoking and satisfying, and each of her timelines as portrayed here very intriguing.
