Why This Must Be Read:

In my previous rec for this month, I recommended a coda for one of my favorite SGU episodes, "Twin Destinies" from Season Two. Here is a short, beautiful bit of writing that explores a key scene from another favorite, "Darkness", from Season One.

In "Canary", the author gives us a peek into Young's mind as Rush falls apart (falls down, falls silent). Short, insightful, well-written - the story shows us both Young's sense of responsibility, and a view of Rush seen through Young's eyes.

Why this must be read:
If you want to read good Young/Rush fic, you need look no further than author cerebel's fanfic pages. Here, the author takes classic fanfic cliches (pollen sex! enclosed spaces!) and turns them into something amazing. Written for Yuletide, and set sometime after the events of "Justice", cerebel imagines the fallout from that episode in a way that is intense, intriguing, and oh-so-hot.

Go, read!

Why this must be read:
Ah, those pesky communication stones - what trouble they cause! Here is a lovely, lovely fic (written for the Stargate Universe Fanfic Exchange) that takes place sometime after Rush returns to Destiny after the events of "Justice". Time is not linear here, and the author interweaves a very interesting encounter between Telford and Rush (in the present) with events from Rush's recent and distant past.

The repeated imagery is especially strong, and the final quote (taken, as was the title, from Machiavelli's "The Prince") could be seen as a wonderfully prescient nod to the events of "Divided".

Enjoy!

Why this must be read:
The month is ending, and so is my time for SGU recs. Here's my deep dark secret - I really, really love Young and Rush. Gen or slash, those boys have great (if more than a little scary) chemistry. As an SGU fan said in a review of one of the earlier episodes, they go together like fire and gasoline.

So, here, finally, I'm reccing some Young/Rush slash. There are quite a few that are wonderful, and no author gets Young and Rush better than cerebel. The fic I've chosen might seem a bit of a strange choice at first - an AU, perhaps? Perhaps.

The author sets up an atmosphere so perfect, so tense and yet somehow flat, like an overexposed photograph, that I was completely drawn in. You will be, too.

Why this must be read:
Let's see, a little gen (check), a bit of het (check). Are we ready for some slash? I think we are.

Greer is one of those characters that would be easy to get all wrong, but here, nemo_r gets him all right. The author takes a classic fanfic cliche and turns it into something more. Sure, this is hot, but it would be wrong to read it just for that reason. Well, not wrong, but there is more to this than just the hot - there is a real sense of seeing Rush through someone else's (very observant) eyes.

Go, read, comment. Tell 'em I sent ya.

Why this must be read:
I'm not a huge reader of het, and I'm not a huge fan of Chloe's character on SGU, and this here? This is one of the best SGU fics I've read. This is the Chloe I would love to see, and this is a Rush I can believe in. On the surface, it might seem an improbable combination, but here, it works so very well! Hot like crazy, well-written - read this, and never look at Chloe the same way again.

Why this must be read:
Let's start at the end, shall we? In this lovely little fic, author elliev imagines an "afterwards" for two of SGU's most compelling characters - after all is said and done, after everyone gets home or does not, after things are lost or gained - afterwards.

Both T.J. and Rush are nicely drawn, but what makes this piece pitch-perfect are all the other details - the setting, the original characters (especially Tommy) and the interactions between the SGU characters and the world they now find themselves in. The fic is part of a larger series that includes "Lunch at Stravaigin" and ladypredator's "Eye of the Storm", but it can stand alone, as well.

Go and enjoy!

Fever

Why this must be read:
I have to fess up. LadyPredator is a good friend so I've been avoiding like hell reccing Fever but there is a dearth of good Stargate Universe fic out there so here it is. Firstly, I have to add the caveat that Fever resulted in me asking LadyPredator if I could write a sequel, the first time that I've ever had a plot bunny after reading a story. Her stuff is like that. All of a sudden, you'll just go, 'Hang on, that's just sparked this brilliant idea.' Fever is a lovely hurt/comfort fic that has the requisite injury, crisis and comfort, though the latter is not quite what I expected because it shows Young, a character I find it hard to be kind to, in a better and kinder light than I would have done.Above all that, it's just a fun read.

A Hard Day for Dreaming

Why this must be read: A follow on from Justice, A Hard Day for Dreaming, has Rush stranded on the planet and trying to get into the alien ship. This story is full of the most extraordinarily lyrical description. Even if you're not an SGU fan, it should be read for the sheer beauty in the descriptions it contains. The ending provides a little hope despite it all, though I'm not sure I don't prefer the alt ending for its daring.

Link: Old Arthur C Clarke was Seldom Wrong

Why this must be read:
There's been a lot of discussion over the end of the episode 'Light' and whether Dr Rush knew what was going to happen. While this short fic does, yes, take perhaps more than it needs from Arthur C Clarke's Rendevous With Rama for copyright's liking, props have to go to the author for the instant recognition of what happened with Destiny and the recharge, and that someone like Rush would click immediately with it. This is the first Stargate Universe fic that I read and it left me with a smile for I, too, recognised what Destiny did. I'm betting that the Ancients would have also thought that old Arthur C Clarke was seldom wrong.
