Why This Must Be Read: Penknife treats us to a marvelous episode tag to Hathor, as Sam and Daniel eat takeout and discuss the ramifications of what happened during Hathor's rampage through the SGC.

There is self-deprecating humor, and almost painful honesty, and wonderful characterization. The twist in perception here is perfectly Daniel, especially with the parallels he draws. And Sam is the perfect friend - no sugarcoating the situation, but just being there, with the promise that they'll both be there for each other in the future.

No episode tag to Hathor could ever be a really happy one, but Penknife gets this one just right.

Why This Must Be Read: When the Wonder Twins get some unexpected private time offworld (courtesy of a herd of wild elephants blocking the Stargate), Sam helps Daniel put some philosophical questions into perspective.

Pepper gives us lovely Sam POV and thoughtful conversation against the intriguing backdrop of sword dancing, as Sam and Daniel talk about expectations and observations and the act of doing instead of simply watching. There's humor and friendship and just the right touch of snark, and Sam's final pithy remark will leave you smiling for being absolutely right.

...And also there are elephants. We need more of those in Stargate! :)

Why This Must Be Read: I love the bittersweet angst and realistism of Naquadah Tipped Warheads & Banana Smoothies and its sequel, The General, The Colonel, Their Child and His Mother by A.M. Richardson. This series is set in season nine SG-1 when Sam is still at Area-51. She discovers she is pregnant a month or so after Jack disappears off-world. She copes with missing Jack and the strangeness of pregnancy after forty with the help of their friends and by keeping a journal of her pregnancy and motherhood to give Jack when, not if, she insists, he is found so that he doesn't miss out on anything.

Though Jack doesn't appear in the first story, the emotions in Sam's journal entries makes him feel very much present. The journal is a clever conceit and and both stories are beautifully written, complicated, messy and sad, very much like real life. Sam finds herself doing things she never thought she'd do and yet unable to master the seemingly simple. Her grief for Jack and at being cheated out of their finally arrived life together is palpable yet somehow the overall tone is very hopeful. There's a lot of humor (Sam is not good at being pregnant or being a new mother) and Daniel in particular shines as the best friend she (or the missing Jack) could hope to have.

The author could have stopped with the first fic and the end would have worked perfectly but did a sequel by popular demand. The first story is wrenchingly sad and proof that babyfic can exist without being saccharine. The sequel gives a happier ending and more closure for those who need it.

Why This Must Be Read: Random treats us to her usual stellar characterization as she gives us five canon incidents about which Sam and Daniel agree to disagree. There's the light humor of the blue dress on Simarka and Daniel's silk pajamas in Summit/Last Stand, the cheerful argument over who made Jack go gray, and the angst of Daniel's ugly words in Need. But best of all, there's the lovely one-up-manship of the last one, which is pure team love at its very finest.

Like all Five Things, this one is short; but you'll find it utterly delightful, and a marvelous read!

Sam has produced graphs that correlate the spread of silver to Daniel's various deaths. Daniel, in turn, filled out her timeline with things Sam's come up with that exploded--sun, ship, more ships, small moon. Ending my two month turn with rec'cing fics about the lovely Samantha with a happy fic--a wonderful bit of ~~fluff~~ dessert. Literally.

It the early days of the SGC. Sam is spending a late night at the office and of course needing a sugar fix. She's not the only one who decides to refuel at the commissary. A nice conversation between two burgeoning teammates turns into a bit of punchy stress relief.

The dialogue flows naturally, the rhythm of the fic builds in an excellent (if cracky manner). Sam's tiredness and strategic thinking is well established in the story, as well as the obvious affection she feels for her teammate(s). And the climactic entrance cannot be missed! I grinned a lot and laughed out loud a couple times while reading it.

Plus, there's blue Jell-O!
