Author's summary: One body with its neck blown out is a puzzle; three identical bodies and a bunch of spooky Air Force types, well, that just makes DaVinci cranky. Or, to quote Cameron Mitchell, "That's a lot of Ba'als to keep in the air."

Why This Must Be Read:

First it was a striking Jack snippet on [livejournal.com profile] troyswann's journal that stood alone as a powerful vignette unto itself. Then it was a work-in-progress posted in sections as gifts for Martha. Now at last it's a gloriously completed fic: a suspenseful thriller with terrifically engaging original characters, a police procedural that crosses over into a fandom whose characters you don't have to be familiar with to appreciate, a sense-of-wonder science fiction story that builds a cool (and creepy) scenario from questions 'Deus Ex Machina' raised, and a gripping SG-1 adventure. And Jack is the linchpin, so I get to rec it here!

What if something came up that had such bitterly intense personal significance to Jack that he did not stay dutifully ensconced in his D.C. office, but made himself a player in the field again? What if his objective and SG-1's objective conflicted? This is a Jack who is very much still in the game, but who's fully capable of making mistakes, too -- smart and formidable and scary and weary and haunted and angry, pushing unstoppably toward a showdown that will not be what he or anyone else expects.

The fic's about 25,800 words, and the crossover source is DaVinci's Inquest. I hope you won't pass on this one because it's long or because it's a crossover. I had seen half an episode of the other show before reading this and I loved all the new-to-me characters. Salieri's writing is a joy from start to finish. It's a rockin' Stargate story. And it's a not-to-be-missed Jack fic.

Excerpt:

Cam found them in Sam's room. When Sam let Cam in, Teal'c was standing with his hands clasped behind his back, facing the door, and that seemed like a bad sign. Daniel got up from the edge of the bed and did the same, except with his hands in his pockets and his head down. He worried the inside of his lip and furrowed his brow and didn't say anything. Sam faced Cam, too, but perched on the edge of the desk. Cam waited; nobody seemed likely to talk anytime this month.

"So?" he prompted. Daniel's head ducked lower; Teal'c stood straighter; Sam looked at her shoes. Great. "Okay." Cam came in and sat on the bed, laced his fingers between his knees and took a breath. "I understand you have a special relationship with General O'Neill." He was careful to keep his eyes in the middle space and not let them stray to Sam, or especially to Daniel. He didn't know anything--rumours and whispers didn't count--and he didn't need to, at least not yet. Crap. A fist tightened up a little in his gut and he sucked in another breath to ease it. "And I admire him. Heck, I wanted to
be him when I grew up." He raised his gaze to Daniel and waited until he met it. "And then I read his file."

Daniel closed his eyes and shook his head before turning to stand at the window. The city was a patchwork, cool squares of dimly lit high rise windows and a shimmer on the bay. The lights on the ski run at Grouse Mountain looked like a landing strip laid out askew on the sky. Against it, Daniel was a curve of resisting silence, but there was a resigned slope to his shoulders that made Cam flinch a little.

Cam put that away and shifted his attention to Sam. "You guys do not get to close ranks on me here. I need to know if he's going to jeopardize this mission."

Oh, it's so excellent to see this recced so fast! It's such a stunning Jack fic.

And I can vouch for the fact that it worked for me even though all I know about DaVinci's Inquest is that possibly Colin Cunningham is in it sometimes.

He is. He's all evil and skanky and unwashed looking. It's creepy.

I'm just glad that my one miniscule piece of knowledge about DaVinci's Inquest has been validated *g*.
