Why This Must Be Read:
How coincidental I'm writing about planet 666 on 6/6/06.
In writing this review, powerful is an adjective I kept wanting to use. It's very appropriate for the category of our strong SG-1 member, Teal'c. It is a fitting homage to this character and this excellent story.
Teal'c reflects back on how he came to the SGC, so there are numerous flashbacks to his time as First Prime, up to his ultimate betrayal of Apophis. Why is he reflecting now? Because it is the anniversary of his meeting SG-1...an anniversary whose remembrance is interrupted by the emergency on P3X-666.
The prose is lyrical, uplifting and heart breaking all at once. Teal'c's voice and torment can be keenly felt by the audience. Komos/Paian draws the parallels of his time with the Jaffa and his time with the SGC in a fluid interweave of emotion and memory.
By the time I was finished reading the fic, I felt a deeper understanding of both Teal'c's character and his betrayal. She places canon and her extrapolations of Jaffa culture into a very believable structure that completes the atmosphere of the story. The coloring is augmented by the "Tau'ri" cultural references and an unusual and believable discussion about religion amongst the team.
I won't be looking at the Jaffa killed in the prison scene of CoTG as redshirts any longer, and the deeply moving events around the grieving of Janet in Heroes 2 are even more poignant in this "powerful" addition to the episode.
There are references to slash couplings as part of the Jaffa warrior culture, and of Teal'c's relationship with his wife. I'm about as gen-centric as they come, and I found these parts moving and powerful. The fic would be incomplete without them.
Of course, it's one of the
tealc_ficathon fics, so if slashier, shippier or other styles of gen catch your fancy, the whole gambit is there in a nice variety of excellent stories. (Disclaimer, I was one of the participants as well).

Date: 2006-09-01 10:25 pm (UTC)I'm so bad about worrying about bias. I hate rec'ing stories by my friends even when I think they're more than worthy of rec for that very reason. For this story, I was willing to make an exception.
The important thing is that this story IS rec'ed. It just so very good that it needs to be widely read. :)
