Why This Must Be Read: When You're Least Expecting It takes place during Fallen from the time SG-1 first met up with Daniel on Vis Uban up until they went through the gate to go back to the SGC. Tiv'ester filled in a lot of the little holes in the story, such as why the members of SG-1 weren't more surprised to see Daniel, why Daniel may have behaved as he did, and what the SG-1 team members may have been thinking once they met up with Daniel. Telling the story from Jack's point of view adds a richness to the story because it's from a perspective that is uniquely Jack's. In many ways, Fallen was a disappointing episode because they didn't really follow through on the part of Daniel's story that they set up in this episode and we really didn't see any satisfying friendship or reconciliation/welcome home moments. Reading stories like this one helps to add depth to that episode and helps to make it a little more satisfying.
