Why This Must Be Read: In this Sentinel fusion, the concept of asexuality is treated much like LGBT issues. The characters are queer and afraid of coming out to the Sentinel/Guide community. The author really explores how John and Rodney buck the system, showing how sex isn't necessary to achieve a strong, stable, loving bond. Set pre-Atlantis, this series gives a look inside a different kind of relationship and the struggle to be seen just as you are. Well worth the read for how loving and kind they are to each other in the midst of a society that treats them poorly.

Why This Must Be Read: Sentinels have to have Guides, but John Sheppard hasn't found his and is beginning to think he never will. He's something of an anomaly, living his life alone and managing his Sentinel gifts. This story is both serious and funny, sad and joyful, as John meets Atlantis and learns how to function with an AI as his Guide. I really enjoyed how esteefee took a basic idea from canon--John's connection with Atlantis--and expanded on it. It's a fast-paced story, a new look at Rising, and the way a different sort of Sentinel and Guide can make all the difference in the world.

Why This Must Be Read: This is the ultimate fix-it story. It starts with the apocalyptic destruction of Atlantis, but for reasons that don't need exploring at this juncture, John and Rodney get sent back many years in time, at the point of the explosion. John comes to on his wedding day to Nancy and he and Rodney meet up and get to do it all over. The trick is that they have to avoid the mistakes they made first time around without changing things so much they don't get to go to Atlantis. It's a nifty idea and well executed - a great ride with a ton of plot, even an evil conspiracy. There are some issues - it might not have been betaed as there are quite a few typos. But I'm fussy about that kind of thing and I didn't need to back-button out - the fic drew me in, despite a few rough edges. I recommend it for an engrossing read.

Why This Must Be Read: Part of me thinks this reads so well to me because, like Sam in this story, I am an outsider to SGA trying to work it out. But most of me thinks this is simply a fantastic, gripping fic that both SGA and SG-1 fans can love!

This is early Sam-in-command-of-Atlantis, still dealing with she's-not-Elizabeth-Weir resentment from the Atlantis team. This is Sam, dealing with a mystery and bad guys with courage and brains and sheer determination. This is Sam and Teyla being awesome together and the team working flawlessly. Add some delightful SG-1 crossing over with superb characterization, and you've got a long, satsifying read that'll definitely leave you wanting more!

One final note: the author labels this as "S/J, but could be read with gen goggles." There was only a single line or two in the final paragraphs that required me to settle my gen goggles firmly on my nose to read as casual male/female friendship, but for Sam/Jack fans, consider that aspect a bonus.
