Summary: A little Ronon & Rodney wrap-up for the events on the hiveship, post-"Enemy At The Gate".

Why This Must Be Read: What I really appreciated about this fic is that Rodney and Ronon are clearly not "pals" or buddies. They might consider each other friends and there's certainly a loyalty that comes from being teammates, but it's not what Ronon has with John or what Rodney has with Zelenka--they just don't have that kind of relationship. I found it so refreshing to have that lack of closeness openly acknowledged, and for Rodney and Ronon to find some closure after the whole Keller triangle.

There are other things to love about this fic too, but I'll leave that for you to discover when you read it :)

Why This Must Be Read: This story is about a Sam, and a Jack, and how they're both a little lost and looking for a way to keep living and fighting. If you enjoyed episodes like, There But For The Grace Of God and Point Of View, and like a good apocafic, you'll love this.

Why This Must Be Read: Once upon a time there was a very funny lj-gif icon about Jack and Sam and Pete (and Hammond). And like most "based on a true story" re-enactments, it left out a lot of the finer details...

[livejournal.com profile] surreallis's Bird Stealing Bread shows us the "real" story behind that icon. A story about being stranded, about dealing, and about the eventual evolution/devolution of Sam's relationships to Jack and Pete. Pitch perfect characterisations and clear writing make this a wonderful (and plausible) read.

Why This Must Be Read:  This story was recc’d April 16/06 by [livejournal.com profile] meeshy. I have found an additional location where it is archived, so I am reposting this wonderful story. It is a timeless piece which can be read as friendship or a pre-slash. More importantly, the characters and their responses to the invasion of Sam’s body by the Entity are believable. It makes up for the abrupt ending to that episode.

Why This Must Be Read: The SGC is to be shut down and its staff scattered to new assignments. Best friends Sam and Janet realize they can't say goodbye. This is a sweet (and eventually intimate story) that examines the shift in Sam and Janet’s relationship as they are forced to acknowledge what they had been taking for granted.

Why This Must Be Read: The ‘shoe is on the other foot’ for a change. Janet suffers the consequences of protecting Cassie and the Stargate Program. SG-1 works to determine the source of the attack and ongoing threat. Sam is forced to examine her feelings as she realizes she could literally lose her ‘adopted’ family. This is an intense story with intrigue, suspense, action and romance.

http://geonncannon.livejournal.com/1270008.html#cutid1

Why This Must Be Read:
This is the first of a series that examines an AU where the events and episodes of Stargate are no longer as we knew them. Geonn Cannon’s is a leader in this genre of fanfiction whose understanding of Sam and Janet (and the entire SGC) draws the reader into a world that is familiar yet different. The characters are the same but their roles and responsibilities at the SGC shift and change from our previous knowledge of the original episodes. An absolute delight to read; not unlike the classic “It’s a Wonderful Life”, Geonn explores the notion of: “what if?”

Why This Must Be Read: My last rec for this month is a slightly fluffy romance. This is light-hearted romance with a little humour thrown in. While fluff is not normally something I read, this is very cute and enjoyable. I realize this is a very odd rec for Halloween, as it is a Valentine's day fic, but give it a read anyway - as a short break from the horror stories ;)

Why This Must Be Read: In this story, Sam is subjected to alien tests, a rescue mission, assaults on three Go'a'uld mother ships, and more. With all the personnel coming and going through the gate, plus the confusion of battle, the SGC loses track of her. The reader follows along as Jack and the SGC trace her footsteps with growing amazement and admiration for what she manages to accomplish. Sam at her best and bravest.

Why This Must Be Read: There's a classic trope in Jack/Daniel fic that's not seen very often anymore: the homophobe who targets Daniel; I read scads of these on Area 52 back when I got into the fandom. Well, Sid has taken the old trope and done something fresh with it for this year's JD Ficathon. The highest praise I can give it is that it's real. As painful as it is for the reader to be inside the head of her OC, Lt. McMahon, his characterization goes far beyond cardboard villain to someone not entirely unsympathetic. Perhaps even more painful are the reactions of those around Jack and Daniel to the situation--they're not sugar-coated and not over-the-top angst, just sadly likely. Meanwhile, McMahon's POV scenes are alternated with Jack's POV, where steamy sex is just a bonus on top of the kind of everyday love and care McMahon can't comprehend. This story transcends the trope to be a masterful take on DADT in society today and how it might impact SG-1.

Why This Must Be Read: The sex is explicit and well-written, but the real attraction of the story comes from the friendship between Jack and Janet.  They're both used to looking after others, maybe more than themselves, and that's what paian shows here, along with fantastic insights into their love for Daniel, their beliefs about death, and their trust in each other.

Why This Must Be Read:

This is a wonderful long series of stories that begin when McKay is making himself invisible from the Air Force and is hiding in the wilds of Canada, doing his thing, and generally being paranoid as hell while watching for aliens. As the author says in her summary: "Screw the bet. Rodney was going to prove the existence of extraterrestrial intelligence. Oh, and incidentally, he might just catch the United States Air Force with their pants around their ankles."

One day while listening for out-of-this-world messages, McKay hears sounds that shouldn't be there. And...

"Rodney suddenly clutched at his head. Oh, damn it! Dish cleaning day. It was dish cleaning day. How could he have forgotten that he'd taken the dish out of alignment? It had been pointed down, not up at the sky, and he was the world's biggest moron for getting excited over picking up some yokel's amateur radio experiment.

"The yokel in question was still droning on audio loop.

"[This is Shepherd calling the Mountain. I repeat, Shepherd to Mountain, please respond. I've got a bit of a... situation here...] "

And for a bonus, [livejournal.com profile] whizzy posted a Hallowe'en story in this series just yesterday.
