Why This Must Be Read:

When I first started reading Jack/Daniel a few years ago, Quercus was one of the first writers I found. She is nothing short of amazing and our fandom is diminished by her leaving it. But the small body of work she left us is a rich treasure just begging to be mined. What Rough Beast was one of the first Jack/Daniel stories I read and it blew me away. Quercus takes Jack and Daniel to Cairo where she weaves a haunting ancient mystery with a gentle, enduring love story. Within the pages of the international press, Daniel discovers a pattern of horrific murders among Egypt's poor and dispossessed that leads him to believe there may be a Goa'uld lurking on Earth. What follows is an exploration of a centuries' old mystery that encompasses far more than just the modern dead and Jack and Daniel discover that, in many ways, the past really is prologue. A cast of exquisite original characters flesh out the story with each one being note perfect. This is a must read for any fan of this pairing and especially for anyone who writes it. Send the spouse and the kids off to the mall, toss the pets into the backyard, pour yourself a nice hot cup of tea and settle in for a good long read. You won't want to put it down and if you shiver a little at the sight of a harmless white butterfly, well, the imagination is a powerful thing and you're about to venture into a master's.

Why This Must Be Read: It's a lovely little piece, written for a prompt battle. The challenge was "John sharing an Earth tradition with Teyla" and in this story it's been sweetly written and well-characterised for a situation not usually seen in the show or the fandom.

There was a ton of amazing gen fic produced for the 2006 Sam Carter Ficathon, but this is one of the ones I go back to read and re-read.

What happens when your life has been trained towards one constant goal and then that goal is taken completely out of your reach? Set pre-canon, Amilyn's Sam is tough, smart, beautiful, hard-working... and oh, so alone. This Sam Carter is canon for me, and watching "Secrets" the other night made me realize even more how well this work slides right into Sam's backstory. Go. Read. Enjoy.

Why This Must Be Read:
This is a delightfully hysterical fic with a rather crack-sounding premise. Essentially, Rodney wants to sell his inventions in the "electronic retailing business" in order to make some money, and John is the well-known king of late-night infomercials assigned to help him on-camera. Don't let the bizarre concept put you off, though, because the author manages to make the entire idea seem completely reasonable, and amidst the humorous plot there is intriguing character development that fits well with our canon understanding of these characters and also puts an unusual AU spin on them. I also like how other canon characters are referenced, particularly Genii Industries (a competitor of AtlantisCorp), and the PegasusTV show 'Parrish & Brown's Brilliant Ideas for Orchards'. In general the story starts off amusing and then veers into a more serious direction, so if you're like me and enjoy both humor and angst, this is perfect. :)

The sequel, Handmade, is also marvelous and provides an intriguing and unusual look into John's background and his perspective on Rodney.

Why This Must Be Read: Sha're was a fascinating character within both the original movie and later on in the SG-1 series, and I always thought it was a terrible shame that we did not get to see more of her. Scotoma is one of my favorite stories not just because we have an AU where Sha're lives, but because rydra_wong portrayed Sha're's strength and dignity in a way that is riveting, while also balances it out with the mischievous sense of humor that we were only able to catch glimpses of during her appearances in the series.

Why This Must Be Read: This excellent short story gives us an intense confrontation between two very determined women: Sha're and Vala.

Vala is startled when a strangely-familiar woman marches into her holding cell and demands that she release Daniel from the bracelet she slapped on his wrist in Avalon. There's attack and counter-attack, with Sha're standing her ground and Vala calling her on Amaunet. And in the end, Vala is forced to concede that she can't win this particular battle.

Stellar characterization and superb voices: Best Laid Plans is a great read that will have you cheering for Sha're - and pleased that Vala will probably get her consolation prize in the form of Cameron Mitchell. :)

Why This Must Be Read: This is probably one of the first John/Elizabeth fic I've read, and I'm very fond of it. But, and more importantly, it's really well-written, the characters are well in-character. Also, in this fic, Atlantis has absolutely no contact with Earth which means that they're still on their own, but that didn't prevent them from thinking about what Earth would think.

Why This Must Be Read: A wonderful, amusing, and completely accurate look into Daniel's brain and how he sees his (possible future) relationship with Vala. Daniel is in denial about what Vala could mean to him, but more accurately he is denying his denial, which is perfectly him. Short and sweet, all five things are drabble length, but each expresses Daniel's feelings very nicely.
