Why This Must Be Read: This excellent short story gives us an intense confrontation between two very determined women: Sha're and Vala.

Vala is startled when a strangely-familiar woman marches into her holding cell and demands that she release Daniel from the bracelet she slapped on his wrist in Avalon. There's attack and counter-attack, with Sha're standing her ground and Vala calling her on Amaunet. And in the end, Vala is forced to concede that she can't win this particular battle.

Stellar characterization and superb voices: Best Laid Plans is a great read that will have you cheering for Sha're - and pleased that Vala will probably get her consolation prize in the form of Cameron Mitchell. :)

Vala sighs. "Look. Once I get what I came for, I'll go. Until then--"

"Until then you hold my Daniel hostage and keep him from a posting he has desired for years. Kema-fe sho'ra."

Oh, that's uncalled for.

"So when the took the parasite out of your head, was Daniel there?" Sha're starts, and Vala feels a small triumph at being able to rattle her. "You were the host to Apophis' queen. They were pulling the snake out of my head just as they were putting it in yours, but I remember that much. But when they took it back out, I'd guess that you had a husband and people who cared about you to go home to. I didn't. So don't you judge me."

Sha're stares at her for a long time before closing her eyes. "I will not speak to you of pain and who has suffered more. I have twice buried a husband--"

"In that case maybe Daniel's better off with me," Vala says, checking her stance just in case Sha're decides to try to slap her again.

But Sha're just gives her an unreadable look. "The husband I buried was Daniel."

Vala feels her eyes grow wide.

"You do not know what you play with," Sha're says, and Vala's beginning to think she might be right about that. "I will have no more pain for my Daniel or me. Do not harm him anymore than you have."

There's no "or else" at the end, but there really doesn't need to be.

And yes! There's need to be more Sha're fic! I'm going to have to break my self-imposed one-author-per-category-per-month rule for our lovely lady, because there just isn't enough of it out there.

It's a GREAT interpretation of the Stargate movie. :)

And whoa. Someone remembers I wrote a Daniel/Sha're fic?? Alas, I got stuck on it. I didn't like the initial way it was playing out, and started to rewrite it... and naturally got stuck.

Belated reply, but... um... do you happen to know anyone who's good at Hammond's voice for a 1st person story? My usual person for this isn't really into SG-1 anymore and I'm flailing. (Yes, you gave me an idea for GTKY...)

Redbyrd has written wonderful Hammond POV, albeit not in first person - try her "1969 Prime." Aelfgyfu has written excellent Hammond fic, too: "Changing of the Guard."

And I'm always happy to sneak a little beta reading in... ;)

Hi, I don't suppose you know if this fic is still available anywhere online or offline? I've got a hankering for Sha're is Awesome fics, and this one sounds right up my street and sadly both the website and the author's journal is gone.

The author has moved lock, stock, and barrel to DW. (I am so grateful to those authors who moved to DW and at least kept their LJs live enough to have links to their stories at the new site!)
