Why This Must Be Read: One of the more unusual crossovers, centered on the TV series "Profiler".  Daniel is kidnapped, yet again, but this time he is thrown into a holding cell with special agent John Grant of the FBI's Violent Crimes Task Force (VCTF).  Questions are raised due to some very odd coincidences when they are rescued by the rest of the VCTF.  All of the characterizations are spot on and the story is well told.

Why This Must Be Read: I just finished reading this (thanks to [personal profile] paian's recommendation on her journal, thank you!) and it is one of those stories that literally made me curse out loud and stand up to pace for a bit.  "Ashes to Ashes" is based loosely in the 'verse of the movie "Reign of Fire" and takes place after the dragons turn everything to cinders; it was written for [community profile] apocalypse_kree, so that should immediately tell you that it's dark, but it's not completely and totally without hope.  It's funny in a few places, very poignant in others and definitely makes your heart drop right to your feet as well.  As always, [profile] kellifer_fic's characterizations and story telling are amazing, so go read this and don't miss out on it just because it's dark.

I'm reccing Jack O'Neill this month and decided, since Jack is such a physical kind of guy, I would start from the top and work my way down.  So, here is the Thinky Rec where we begin with The Fron Mind

Rec Category: Jack O'Neill
Pairing:  Jack O'Neill/Daniel Jackson (barely), Jack O'Neill/Samantha Carter UST
Category: Angst, apocafic, episode tag
Warning:  Slash (barely), referenced character deaths
Author on LJ:  [personal profile] nandamai
Author's Website:  http://nandamai.net/
Link:  here

Why This Must Be Read:  This is Jack's POV of the events following Lost City and is an Alternate History of those events.  Nanda writes a breathtakingly sad story of their journey to the end of all they know, with Daniel providing the details that Jack desperately tries to put together in his mind.   "Pieces" references many things:  the pieces of  their current situation that Jack tries to reconcile with what was once true, the way in which he wonders if his mind is whole, bits of a life lived that float to the top unexpectedly.  Overall, it is a beautifully done, surprisingly ungraphic apocafic.  The slash is barely touched upon, brilliantly placed and could be easily passed over by those uninterested.

Why This Must Be Read: This story is hilarious and bizarre and, within the cracked-out universe of SGA, weirdly plausible. Rodney gets himself in a duel for a ZPM on a cowboy planet, where the locals are using it as a spittoon. In the midst of the complete and total crack, the team gives a beautiful demonstration of their ability to work together as a smooth, well-oiled machine.

A brief excerpt, since it's a brief story:

"Colonel, the nice men here," Rodney spits, gesturing around at all the angry faces, "are determined to continue using an almost fully-charged ZPM as some sort of spittoon."

"It's their spittoon," John states, as mildly as possible. "It's up to them what they do with it."

Link: The Wrong Button

Why This Must Be Read: “Jack always suspected that one day Daniel would push the wrong button and the world would end.”

Of course, it’s which world that makes this story so fascinating…

What begins as fun and fluffy, with entertaining Wonder Twins geekery and fantastic Jack-and-Daniel banter, suddenly takes a ninety degree turn into horror when the wrong button gets pushed and Sam, Jack, and Daniel get to literally watch as a world is completely destroyed. There’s great characterization and wonderful dialogue, as Jack helps Daniel come to some kind of acceptance – by reminding him of their shared history, and the triumphs and tragedies that inevitably result just from living.

Call this a sort of light apocafic, perhaps. But read it, and enjoy!

Why This Must Be Read: To borrow from the story, “Step away from the chocolate covered Rodney.” And who wouldn't want a chocolate covered McKay (well except me, I can't actually eat chocolate). The author spins an entertaining tale about the consequences of Rodney taking a involuntarily dip in a river of aphrodisiac chocolate. Apparently it was the aliens way of saying thank you. A fun read.

Discere et Docere

Why This Must Be Read: Abyssis always writes the most beautiful Sam and Daniel fics. This enchanting story, written for the [info]sd_ficathon, is truly special.

In an arc that encompasses eight seasons of sea change before finally coming full circle, Abyssis gives us glimpses into Sam and Daniel’s friendship – the way they change and grow over the years, both through the events of their lives and the effect they have on each other. There’s compassion and tension and tears and laughter; and while the Season Five one (excerpted below) is my personal favorite, each of these is written with a kind of gentle affection that fits Sam and Daniel perfectly.

The lines that introduce each year, all by themselves, say more about these two than many other stories I’ve read. This is a fic to read carefully, and savor.

Warning: slash

Link: Trouble Me

Why This Must Be Read:

Because it's a piercing look at the costs of command, and the reasons John is glad to bear them. After Misbegotten, Elizabeth and Carson and Rodney are each wondering how to reconcile their consciences, but John knows where the blame and responsibility truly lies.

When they were being debriefed on earth, after the Daedelus saved their asses from the Wraith at the end of that first year on Atlantis, General O'Neill had sat down across from John in the mess hall and said, "Command is distancing."

John looked up from his lunch and it took him a moment to shift his thoughts from the vagaries of mystery meat to the totally random and abrupt conversational starter.

"Yes, sir, it is," John said when he'd processed the general's words and had his attempt at a salute lazily waved away.

"It's not always that way, though. Sometimes it's close and ugly, and that's worse." O'Neill had poked at the condiments on the table, arranging them in descending size order with a great deal of attention. "They don't understand and they
shouldn't. Not entirely. That's what you're there for."
