Why This Must Be Read: First Person fic are often a crap shoot. It can be easy to write, but only if the author can really get into the character's head. Emry does a good job of this as she writes as Sam as Sam is getting ready to give Janet's eulogy.
While Sam does this, she thinks and contemplates, who she is, why she is as she is, and exactly what her mom meant when she said 'We all pay a price in life."
I think it's a lovely angstful fic that should appeal not only to Sam fans, but Janet fans as well as it also deals with the friendship between the two women

Why This Must Be Read:
This is another oldie but a goodie. On a 'routine' mission - aren't they all - Sam doesn't make it back. And, you knew this was coming, the boys gotta go back for her.
In a lot of ways, it's your typical adventure story. Sam has to take care of herself while the boys try to find her, and I think that's a lot of the appeal. Especially when the more recent episodes of the show seem to showcase the plot instead of character interaction, it's refreshing to read something set back in the 'good old days' when you actually felt that these folks gave a fig about each other.
I enjoyed the fact that Jacob gets involved, and that Sam is far more than your run of the mill damsel in distress and does a pretty good job of taking care of herself.
If you're in the mood for a good old fashioned 'go through the gate, get into trouble, get out of trouble, go home' adventure with a dash of real team action thrown in, this is a good fic to check out.

And just a slightly related note, the novel archive itself is a great place to find some older, longer, fic. Especially fic whose author's main site may no loner exist.

Aftershocks by Rachel500 (PG)

Rec Category: Sam Fic
Pairing: Hints of Sam/Jack, nothing overt yet
Category: Missing Scene/Tags
Warning: This may very well end up shippy, but it's early in the series yet. It is also a WIP of a sort, a continuing series of a tag/missing scene for every episode. Presently it's on Season Two

Why This Must Be Read: What I really like about this series is that, while some of them do focus on Sam, it's not solely a Sam series. Nor is it purely about Jack or Daniel or Teal'c. All of them get their turn. Rachel has taken the show and explored each character's feelings as their relationships and friendships grow during the seasons in a very believable way. And she does it without a lot of foreshadowing, which is kinda of hard when you consider that she's writing about episodes that aired years ago and characters that have grown and changed a lot in the past ten years.
While I know that every chapter may not appeal to everyone, I feel that there is a wide enough variety to please at least a chunk of the readers out there.
It's also very, very fun to go back and see the developing friendships through 'fresh' eyes, along with revisiting some old and favorite episodes.
It is a continuing series and I believe that it is Rachel500's intent to eventually write every episode, and if she does that I think she'll accomplish a feat that no other fanfic writer has done in this fandom.

Why This Must Be Read: There's not a ton of extra stuff to this fic, in fact it's rather short. But it is a nice angst fix if you're a Sam and Jack fan. Sam is injured, Jack is with her, off world and she's dying. So, of course, folks say things to clear the air before 'the end'…and then the dying person doesn’t die.
It might serve better as a prequel, although I have the idea that it'll only stand alone. If you're a ship fan in the mood for a short angst fic, you should enjoy it.

Why This Must Be Read: The fun part about this fic is that it's not what you'd expect. It starts out early s7 and Daniel returns. And, numbers being what they are, someone must leave SG-1. Sam doesn't think that it's fair that it be the obvious choice, Jonas, especially after he worked so hard to earn his spot on the team. And she knows that Daniel wants and needs to rejoin the team, so she chooses to leave.
Her choice takes her and Jonas - who ends up kicked off the team by powers far above Hammond and Jack - to Area 51 and a whole new set of issues.
They, in the midst of a top secret mission, find themselves at odds with their friends and former co-workers and end up across the galaxy just as their old nemesis, the replicators, show up.

What I enjoyed about this is that it didn't fall into the 'poor Sam must be rescued by her hero Jack' cliché. Nor does it vilify anyone - except for the main protagonist of course. Daniel fans may be a little sensitive in the beginning, yet it doesn't blame him for anything, neither does it blame Jonas. It is simply the story of folks trying to do the right thing and becoming victims of their circumstances and those that will manipulate them for their own gain.

For the shippers, there is an undercurrent created by the tensions between Sam and Jack as he deals with her leaving, but I didn't feel that it was too OTT.

A nice long adventuresome read for those that liked the Season Six dynamics.

Why This Must Be Read:Don't let the character death put you off, this is a happy ending fic. In it, Sam does die...and remains behind as a ghost. Now it's an idea that's been done a lot, but this was one of the first examples.
What I enjoyed was that Sam confronted, more than once, leaving them and going 'away', yet still stayed behind, largely because her friends weren't quite ready to let her go yet. And, through a plot twist, it is revealed that those very same friendships are what allows the happy ending.
It may be a little sappy for some, but at its core it's a nice story of the undying - pun intended - power of the friendship of these folks. and we have the bonus of Sam actually rescuing herself in a way.

Why This Must Be Read:

Post-Grace Under Pressure, [livejournal.com profile] alyse's Spindrift is a master of characterization as she describes the after-effects of the episode's events. With beautiful prose and brilliant dialogue, this fic is a wonderful example of quiet contemplation and an intriguing look at how one defines bravery.

okay, it is coming up on the end of the month (don't tell me this, I have a deadline with a story and it is so close!) and, well, there's a substantial list of people who volunteered for a category and have yet to post a single rec.

Bush has "Stay The Course" I have, "It's only four!" Seriously, guys, I know things come up, I really know this as I can tell "my life went to pot in about thirty seconds!" stories with the best of them. We understand if something like that happens...

But.

We don't want to be filling categories with volunteers just for the sake of the name on the post at the beginning of the month and with some categories it's becoming a pattern.

Basically here goes, if you've volunteered for a category this month and have not delivered any recommendations yet you've got less than a week to deliver a few of them or, please, just let us know something is wrong and preventing you from fulfilling your duties as reccer for your category for this month.

We do have a list of the volunteers who have yet to post recs for particular categories so if we don't see recs from you over that period or at least hear why you've bee unable to rec, I'm going to turn up in the comments of your journal (I'll pick an entry that's recent but not too well populated) and leave a comment asking why. I promise I'm not going to break out the thumb screws or anything but, we do need to be a little official about this. We'd rather have a category go without someone in it than with a reccer who isn't going to deliver. At least this way, we have a chance of someone else volunteering who will.

I'm not here to browbeat, believe me I know stuff happens BUT...I have to point it out.

So, uh, recs please? Six days, gives you two whole days to slip in at least one extra one! *G*
