Why This Must Be Read:

Lorne is wonderfully Lorne in this; and, because Lorne is not part of Teyla's inner circle, Teyla by way of his perception carries an intriguing sort of mystique about her. Lorne's personality is marked by practicality, unflappability, and deadpan sense of humor; he's not stingy with respect and admiration, either, where it's due. I like seeing Teyla filtered through all of that.

Their conversation, and even Lorne's train of thought, doesn't give away the sudden UST turn the story takes toward the end; but the physical, tactile descriptions of their interplay does. It makes the turn a bit of a surprise, a bit of an illicit moment, and very much the sort of thing I'd like to see followed up on a quiet, out-of-the-way, moonlit balconey sometime.

Why This Must Be Read:
This is a prequel to the wonderful "General and Dr. Sheppard", set in the AU world where BDSM and bisexuality is the norm, a world paralleling the "normal" Atlantis expedition. The backdrop for the story, the world these characters inhabit, is rich and well-thought-out, the rituals that are commonplace to them are exotic and fascinating, and the characters themselves are close to the ones we know and love, only with that little twist that makes them unique to the world they live in. The characters of Rodney and John aren't yet the ones we met in "G&DS", but they're on their way to becoming them, sort of like a bridge between the characters of our universe and the fully-engaged characters we saw in the first story. While dealing with the craziness that is the Pegasus galaxy, these characters have to deal with interpersonal problems, and the characters are so well drawn you can't help but get caught up in their situations and sitting on the edge of your chair when Bad Things appear about to happen. And the characters around them are just as interesting, making me want to read more about them as well as the two central characters: Elizabeth and her heartache over the loss of her sub, Carson's wistful longing for a sub of his own, Teyla's insight into both the people around her and what she wants for a sub while Ford is being a big puppy, trying to get her attention. And Radek, poor Radek! a pervert in their society because he doesn't top or bottom and in monosexual, i.e., just likes women, part of a group that is just starting to come out of the closet. There is angst and romance and kinkiness and sex, all bound up in a fascinating story that I'd read over and over again.

Why This Must Be Read:
This is a breathtaking story, one that is written so incredibly well that you spend the entire story in the headspace of Cameron Mitchell and you don't know what the hell is going to happen next. I love that. I love everything about this story. I love the way she shows Cameron getting into his subspace, getting ready to play games, and then plunges him into an icy cold stream of panic and dismay. And you're there with him, having no idea what is going on, whether Cameron's life has just been royally screwed or if he's about to get the treat of his life. And it continues, and you're never entirely sure of what the hell is going on, just like Cameron, and it's perfect. And then when you do get there, when you get what's happening, wow. It's just... Wow. But my favorite, favorite part is the next morning, when Jack is sort of explaining things to Cameron in his own way. That just ties the whole thing together, brings the story around full circle, and it's sad in a way and sweet, and damn, I wish that someone knew me as well as Jack knows Daniel.

While this is technically part of a series of stories, it can definitely stand on its own and you don't have to read the first one to get what is going on.
