Why This Must Be Read:
This is a prequel to the wonderful "General and Dr. Sheppard", set in the AU world where BDSM and bisexuality is the norm, a world paralleling the "normal" Atlantis expedition. The backdrop for the story, the world these characters inhabit, is rich and well-thought-out, the rituals that are commonplace to them are exotic and fascinating, and the characters themselves are close to the ones we know and love, only with that little twist that makes them unique to the world they live in. The characters of Rodney and John aren't yet the ones we met in "G&DS", but they're on their way to becoming them, sort of like a bridge between the characters of our universe and the fully-engaged characters we saw in the first story. While dealing with the craziness that is the Pegasus galaxy, these characters have to deal with interpersonal problems, and the characters are so well drawn you can't help but get caught up in their situations and sitting on the edge of your chair when Bad Things appear about to happen. And the characters around them are just as interesting, making me want to read more about them as well as the two central characters: Elizabeth and her heartache over the loss of her sub, Carson's wistful longing for a sub of his own, Teyla's insight into both the people around her and what she wants for a sub while Ford is being a big puppy, trying to get her attention. And Radek, poor Radek! a pervert in their society because he doesn't top or bottom and in monosexual, i.e., just likes women, part of a group that is just starting to come out of the closet. There is angst and romance and kinkiness and sex, all bound up in a fascinating story that I'd read over and over again.
Excerpt:
John watched as Rodney slowly closed his eyes and then opened them again, and then he lay there, and there was an expression in his eyes of such sad acceptance that John's breath caught in his throat. Suddenly this had gone beyond duty for John, beyond his faintly bored witnessing of an unpleasant man getting his due. The expression in Rodney's eyes seemed to say, "Right. Yes. Of course. Here we go again." And rather than looking like the brusque, sarcastic scientist John thought he knew, now he resembled nothing so much as a lost, forlorn puppy, friendless and without a home. That realisation took John totally by surprise and now his interest in the proceedings was no longer dispassionate. Now it felt personal.
