Why This Must Be Read: This is a fantastically written fic, with great pacing and a terrific grasp of the characters. Vala is her sassy self but just a touch of vulnerability, and Daniel is DANIEL, understanding how a newcomer feels at the SGC, therefore understanding Vala and her current situation. The author involves the teammates, popular earth culture, and all that has come before for these two to create a wonderful story atmosphere.
(And the sex is pretty hot too.)

Excerpt:
Given everything you can say about Vala - she's a petty, self-centered, manipulative thief, to start - you can't say that she isn't smart. The double negative makes Daniel's head hurt every time she does something clever on a mission, unofficial fifth on SG-1, but it's the best way he has to explain it, and for some reason he feels like he needs to explain it.

She's a pain in the ass, but somewhere along the way she got to be his pain in the ass.

Why This Must be Read:
This is a great and realistic look at how the Sam/Jack relationship progressed after season 8. It brings out the plans that they've made, why and how their jobs have changed, and how they deal with it. Again, I have to say that the greatness of the fic is not just the plot and how it's executed but the fact that nandamai has a great way of bringing out the Sam/Jack dynamic while sticking with cannon.

Excerpt:
“With all due respect, Mr. President,” Jack says, “I thought I made it pretty clear I didn’t want to be disturbed.”

Hayes answers in his affable way. “Jack, Jack, diplomacy knows no schedule.”

“I didn’t ask to be a diplomat, sir.”

Behind him, Carter whispers, “Jack!”

But Hayes merely laughs. It’s a tight laugh, but it’s still a laugh. “I know you didn’t, Jack. You’re just a good sport. But I need you on this.”

Jack grinds his knuckles into his forehead and sighs. “Yes, sir.”

“Colonel Carter’s a fine officer, Jack,” Hayes says, lowering his voice. Jack hears a smirk. “The best we’ve got. She’ll understand.”

She will, and that makes it worse. She expects to have half a relationship. “If you don’t mind, sir, I’d rather not discuss —”

“Of course, of course. I’m sorry I brought it up.” That damn smirk is still in the President’s voice, though, and Jack reminds himself that his personal life is now a matter of public record. Among the public that has high enough clearance, anyway.

Why This Must Be Read: Atlantis is crack. Why should the AU fanfics be any different?

This was the first Atlantis fanfic I ever read. (Yes, fear for my sanity!) I hadn't seen the show, and I had only seen Rodney's appearance in 48 Hours on SG-1. Still, this fic laid me out laughing. Now that I've drunk the Kool-Aid? Even better! John is an ambulance driver and Rodney is a (tacky, tacky, horny) ER doc. Completely AU, and yet completely in character.

Why This Must Be Read: Aliens Made Them Do It : Non-con? Or funny and/or hot? This and the following are two examples of non-con by favorite writers of mine known for their skill and humor. Looking at the storylines, I think I should be squicked and disturbed on behalf of the characters, but I don't feel it. Er, not to get too meta in the recs... Anyway, that's how I feel about it. What do you think?

Aliens, restraints and drugging form the barest excuse for PWP, but when Daniel is this hot and dirty -- grab the excuse and go with it! Jack says no, his body says yes, and I feel like such a bad feminist now. Bonus points for the very funny debriefing and a long-suffering Hammond.
