Mid-Month (Almost) Reminder

Just want to remind everyone that signing up early for rec'cing is something that I love to see. (Gives me happy smiles and all that! *g*)

Also, there is at least one category where a line is starting to form. So if you want to rec for that one, best get your name down. *g*

One last reminder (or two actually)...

PLEASE do not list a specific month in your rec request post. I've given several reasons as to why I'm trying to eliminate this practice. I'm not sure why I'm continuing to see it, but please, it just makes life easier all the way around. It REALLY does! Help out [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] and I, okay?

Lastly, if you're wanting to continue on as a rec'cer in a specific category, remember to put in a brand new post and don't reply to your old one. Treat it like a brand new request and we'll go from there. It eliminates confusion if all the requests to rec are in separate posts.

These may seem like small requests, but really, they're VERY important. We're up to almost 500 members now and I'm soooooooooooooooooooo excited about that, I can't even tell you. We have a large group of volunteers who now help out [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] and I. (I still can't believe that at one time it was just her and I that did all this.)

With having so many members now, I'm thinking we could easily have over half the categories being rec'ced for a while. New rec'cers, old rec'cers, repeat rec'cers... everyone is encouraged and welcome. Besides that, the more rec'cers the more variety. The more variety, the more fun we can have!

Why This Must Be Read: Hydrosphere is yet another excellent Sheppard piece from Martha. Set very early on in the show, the team are exploring a ‘gate address and find something unexpected. Also, the interaction between the S1 team is as always wonderfully depicted. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Martha has Sheppard’s voice down and manages to keep a perfect balance between the soldier and irreverent rogue aspects of his character.

I usually don't like reading Sam ship fics. I've read far too many in which the Sam Carter character I know (scientist, warrior, pilot) gets replaced by a simpering little girl child who's experiencing life affirming tru wuv with whomever. (Sorry if I offend anyone, but that's my strongly felt opinion). That's why I took this category this month to see if anyone could write Sam in love, not luv.

This is why Against All Odds is such a good read. Samantha is military and she loves Janet. She doesn't lose who she is just because she's involved with Janet. Janet's parents are concerned when they meet Janet's new partner - not just because Janet is gay, but because Sam is military, and they worry how the hardened warrier will balance with Janet's compassion. Plus side on this rec, Sam and the rest of the SGC goes to war, and events leave Sam in control of the resulting mess when her superiors are injured, and she manages to pull it off successfully. Meanwhile Janet's home, with the homefires lit, worrying about her lover.

Why This Must Be Read: First off, it's Rowan!fic. Quite honestly, I think I would strongly reccommend anything and everything that she writes. She takes a unique and sometimes deeper take on the CHARACTERS that just bring everything else to life with vivid detail.

Specifically, this is a great look at the growth and development of Sam. Starting from her early childhood and moving right up through the current SG-1 timeline. It's just great.

Why This Must Be Read:

I don't like threesome fics very often. And I'm reccing slash here. So why, you ask, am I reccing this to you? Well, because I loved it that much (there's plent of John/Rodney to satisfy any slash purists).

I should start by saying that this is brain-numbingly hot. I mean drool-inducing, 'guh,' keyboard-smash hot. Slow and gradual and more than a little hedonistic, eretria build the tension of this fic over the course of 16,000 words into something that digs beyond pure porn and explores the characters themselves. You sense Sam's pragmatism and care with others, Rodney's intense focus and joyful approach to sex, John's complex need and slight skittishness. She really nails her characterizations here, with Sam and John especially note-on. These are characters with layers, and the emotional resonance from the characterization rachets up the heat of the sex.

There's a lot more to squeal about here (perfect pacing, lush and delicate descriptions), but one thing I thought I'd hit on was the craft that went into writing this. It's frankly hard to write threesomes without tangling up the physical actions of the characters, the emotional undercurrents of the scene, or both. Eretria makes it look effortless. Anyone who loves great characters and really, really well-written porn owes it to themselves to read this one.
