Why This Must Be Read:
I'm getting a late start on my reccing duties this month, but I promise you that I've got a list of fics to rec all lined up for this month. This story is a brand new one that I just found today and finished reading. So this kind of falls under the heading of an insta rec.

In this fic John and Rodney have two weeks of shore leave on Earth and this time around Rodney talks John into going home to Canada with him. During the trip Rodney tries to reconnect with his sister and John makes an attempt at reconciliation with his family. Some attempts are more successful than others. In the end John and Rodney both come to realize that family is about more than blood. They get the clue that the family you come from means less than the one you make for yourself.

This fic has quickly become one of my favorites. In fact I think I'm going to have to go read it all over again. It's that good.

I promise to get to work on that list of recs I've got lined up for the month. I'm sure the season premiere on friday should give me plenty of motivation.

Why This Must Be Read: When a fanfic cliché is done right, it's a beautiful thing, and here it is. This piece takes a turn at the "what if the Stargate went public" premise, using a very sympathetic Bregman as a foil for a haunted, hunted, and beaten-down Daniel who has been left holding the bag in front of the world. How the world would react is an interesting question to consider, and I could see it going down much like this. I love the descriptions of how Daniel reacts in public, versus his growing disillusionment and disconnection with the human race in private; how we as a society express our fear and hatred through less, um, physical means (funny, but absolutely typical), and even the third-person accounts of the rest of the team ring absolutely true. The story is told through Bregman's eyes, and his humanity and compassion bring a gentleness to this piece that saves it from being as bleak as it could have been. And is that a tiny flicker of hope I see in the distance at the very end? You tell me.

Why This Must be Read: This is one of the better rape/recovery stories I've ever read. It was realistic, harsh, gritty, kind of sad, but with a sense of hope too. I love the way Robin wrote the characters and how she shows the friendship between Jack and Daniel grow deeper.
