Why This Must Be Read: When a fanfic cliché is done right, it's a beautiful thing, and here it is. This piece takes a turn at the "what if the Stargate went public" premise, using a very sympathetic Bregman as a foil for a haunted, hunted, and beaten-down Daniel who has been left holding the bag in front of the world. How the world would react is an interesting question to consider, and I could see it going down much like this. I love the descriptions of how Daniel reacts in public, versus his growing disillusionment and disconnection with the human race in private; how we as a society express our fear and hatred through less, um, physical means (funny, but absolutely typical), and even the third-person accounts of the rest of the team ring absolutely true. The story is told through Bregman's eyes, and his humanity and compassion bring a gentleness to this piece that saves it from being as bleak as it could have been. And is that a tiny flicker of hope I see in the distance at the very end? You tell me.

I know what you mean about icons. I've tried making icons for other fandoms and people, but since I only have Paint for any real photo editing... ja, they sucked rather much.

Oh, wow! That is fantastic. Very believable, very sad. I've always thought that if the Stargate goes public while anyone from SG-1 is still alive, they'll all have to move offworld, and this is why. Terrific rec, thank you!

You're welcome! I've just found this piece myself, and fell in love with it. I adored that the world's response is to sue Daniel (litigious bastards that we are) because he's the only person we can target to voice our frustration at having our world view rocked. And his swing from being certain that everyone would share in his joys to his doubts that he ever had the right to speak for a society he clearly never understood - this just makes me do the happy/sad dance...:D

:purrs: This story was awesome. Gods, and you just know that that would be the response for most of the world - that angry, rocked-to-the-core-and-not-taking-it-well attitude. Then you got the others who will worship Daniel for having brought aliens to earth, gloating about that they were right all along and totally ruining what Danny's been trying to get at.

As for the flicker of hope... hm, perhaps. In the distance, surely, but Daniel's never been afraid to make it that far.
