Why This Must Be Read: One of my fiction kinks, if you will, are stories in which the characters can only communicate through a very limited medium -- over the radio, for example, or via notes passed through a hole in the wall. I love it as a general storytelling challenge, to see how different writers meet the challenge of developing a character-focused plot when the characters can't touch and often can't see each other, but it's also a total h/c kink for me too -- it forces the writer to forego most of the usual h/c cliches, since physical interaction is not possible, and also puts one (or more) of the characters in the unenviable situation of witnessing a friend in peril and being unable to help.
... all of which is a really long-winded explanation for why I love this story so very much.nottasha uses this particular narrative trick in several of her stories, but this is by far my favorite, because of other trappings of the scenario -- Rodney accidentally triggers an Ancient device that traps him in a small enclosed space behind an impenetrable layer of high-tech glass. He's slowly running out of air, while Sheppard has to calm him down, keep him focused ... and keep from going crazy as Rodney deteriorates before his eyes. To make Sheppard's life even more difficult, he's also cut off from the rest of his team (Ronon and Teyla are having their own problems while all this is going on) ... and did I mention there are Wraith? This is not just one of my favorite John and Rodney stories, but one of my favorite team stories as well, with Ronon and Teyla being resourceful and clever, Sheppard out of his depth but doing his best anyway, and Rodney in mortal peril -- what's not to like?
