Why This Must Be Read: This story takes place in the Mensa AU, and Rod does not actually appear in it, which might make it an odd choice for this category. But this is a really fascinating look at AU!John's friendship with Rod, taking place during the time when Rod is in our universe, as John looks back on the years they've known each other and begins to understand what a hole Rod's disappearance has left in his life. I love the way that Sheppard is developed here, as a person who's recognizably similar to our Sheppard and yet has been shaped into a different person by his life experiences, as is Rod. And it's a wonderful glimpse of a friendship that is just as deep as the one in our universe, yet has a completely different flavor to it.
