Why This Must Be Read: This short fic, set sometime in the early seasons, throws us straight into a crisis hostage situation: Sam in the hands of an alien soldier, who is armed with a primitive weapon aimed directly at her head. Daniel has his pistol, but the sneering native is confident that Daniel could never shoot to kill....

Idealist Daniel is so much more fascinating than fanon pacifist Daniel. For a short ficlet, Jenn packs a lot of characterization in here. Both Sam and Daniel shine in this one, from Daniel's last words to the soldier to Sam's quie,t final gesure. This is Sam and Daniel friendship at its absolute best.

I have to confess, I've been guilty of labeling Daniel as a pacifist, especially when it comes to preventing a fight. But I have no trouble picturing this Daniel, calmly deciding that Sam's life is worth more, much more, than someone else's.

Daniel is much more forgiving to people who torture and even kill him than to people who threaten his friends. Deliciously scary, really. :)
