Why This Must Be Read: I love skoosiepants' work. She writes humor so well, and all her fics are sweet and fun. In this one, Rodney McKay is a successful science fiction writer. His book series, Star Warrior, follows a military man with gravity-defying hair traveling to other planets with his teammates. But he doesn't really exist, right? Not so much. This is one of the few fics where John joins the SGC before Rodney does, and they have a psychic connection because of ancient tech. It's fun!

Why This Must Be Read: I've been craving long McShep fic that really focuses on the romance. Reading this really satisfied that craving. John and Rodney have moved to a new town for various reasons, and end up buying a house together. Cohabitation comes easily for them, much to their surprise. It's just a 42k fic about the two of them meeting, setting up a house together, and falling in love. Sometimes it's just what a fangirl needs~

Why This Must Be Read: This is a Stargate Atlantis/Star Wars fusion. Specifically, according to the tags, SW: Knights of the Old Republic. I'm not all that into Star Wars, if I'm honest. I can't keep the characters straight, and I'm confused on the timeline of some things. This fic is written in such a way that it doesn't matter. I love science fiction AUs, and there's not many of them because SGA is already sci-fi. So it's fun to read a fic where they travel to other planets, and meet alien species, but in a way that's not Stargate. All the worldbuilding is light and background (no info dumps here). John and Rodney are so sweet and deeply in love in this fic - they can't keep their hands off each other. And I love that John and Rodney are just two regular people and it's Teyla and Ronon who are the Jedi Knights with the important missions. It's fun, with a bit of angst (especially concerning everybody's pasts). It's romantic, and it's team.

Why This Must Be Read: Sam shows what she's made of as a pilot in this one. Jack knows she's good, but he didn't know exactly how good until now...and he and others finally come to realize that. The trust and friendship between Sam and Jack shine through brilliantly in this story, as does the UST. But when it all comes down to it, this story is just a lovely read, perfect for curling up with in bed at the end of a long day. The sequel is just as good, but that's a rec for another day. ;)

Why This Must Be Read: I went looking for some older Jack O'Neill fic that could use some love. Found an entire AU universe I never knew existed!

This specific story is one part of an entire series called "The House That Jack Built (Stargate AU)" that is very roughly based on the idea of The Big Bang Theory. I haven't had a chance to read them all, but there are 32 (!) stories in this universe, written by a handful of writers.

This particular story seems to be how Jack and Sam get together. But there may be variations on that theme in the series! It'll be fun to find that out!

Why This Must Be Read: Sheafrotherdon is well-known in SGA for her AUs and this one follows John Sheppard, small town boy, carpenter, and country singer at the local dance hall. He runs into a college professor from the next big town over, who's just looking for a decent beer. This slow, sweet romance makes good use of its setting in a slow, small town, bringing together two men who seem settled into their lives, but still ready to make room in their hearts for the right person. Warm and lovely and gentle, this is comfort fic of the finest kind.

Why This Must Be Read: I love this simple, short, yet satisfying fic - it's like that very first mouthful of cold fizzy liquid [insert your drink of choice here] on a hot summer's day! This story begins with Jack's retirement from Homeworld Security and ends with Sam questioning his maturity. The "meat" of the story is the best part - I won't say any more! To me, this story is a fitting (and acceptable) extension to the Jack/Sam relationship. It's equal parts funny and sexy!

Why This Must Be Read: Written by a fellow Aussie, this fic explores the alternate universe proposed in the season 1 episode 'There But for the Grace of God.' There's a strong focus on the developing romantic relationship between Jack and Sam, but it also touches on the unusual pairing of Janet and Kawalsky. The fic flirts with a few other first season episodes including 'Children of the Gods' and 'The Broca Divide.' I hate to play favourites, but this fic stands out for me - I've read it two or three times. I think the story and characters are well developed and executed. Without spoiling the ending for those who haven't read it, there's two choices depending on your personal preferences. If you're a Jack/Sam shipper (or just a connoisseur of good fanfiction), this one will hit the right buttons - just keep a box of tissues handy, because it's heavy on the angst! The author also weaves in a few new characters, including the loveable Leslie, who fit perfectly into the universe.

In a way, 'Meet you on the Other Side' has elements of the 'Pride and Prejudice' about it (particularly in the first few chapters), but I choose to view the "borrowing" of familiar themes endearing - and I hope you do too! Happy reading!

Why This Must Be Read: Continuing on with the marriage/wedding theme this is a fun, feel-good fic. DADT has ended and Rodney thinks getting married is a great idea. John's not so easy to convince. Especially since they're not even a couple.

John's great mistake was that he let his guard down. Two whole weeks of not getting hit on, ogled, or propositioned and he had started to think Rodney had regained sanity. He didn't even see the date coming.

Why This Must Be Read: This 2500 word gem of a story brings together two of my favorite recurring themes in Jack/Daniel stories: the setting is Jack's cabin in Minnesota, and the time is after the first episodes of season 7, when Daniel has returned from Ascension and is regaining his memories. Cofax is such a wonderful vivid writer and I am sure you will enjoy her carefully observed look at this wonderful moment in time.

The author manages to come up with a reasonable explanation of why Sam married Pete. And it has a "happy" (Jack/Sam) ending.

Why This Must Be Read: Just shortish and so goddamn sweet and loving and all things nice.

Excerpt: The first time Rodney kisses John is in the infirmary after the incident on P4X-991. John can hear the soft murmur of his team's voices before he wakes, but when he finally manages to open his bleary eyes, there's only Rodney frowning down at him. He pulls one corner of his mouth up in what he hopes resembles a smile but feels more like a grimace. Rodney glares at him and goes off about the people of P4X-991 and hunting rituals and certain flyboys' suicidal tendencies. John's eyelids drift closed again under the weight of so many words and then there's silence for a few minutes. The kiss—a softly whispered "idiot" pressed against his lips—feels like an afterthought, an ipso facto born of one too many near-death experiences. John, doped up on morphine, can't find the strength to drag his eyes open again, but he feels a warm tingly sensation in his toes.

Why This Must Be Read:

I had a very hard time selecting just one of Lady of Asheru's stories to rec. Please do investigate the link above to all her Jack/Daniel stories, if you enjoy this one. I finally decided on "The Way of the Gods" because it has a charming and fascinating offworld adventure framing her delightful take on Jack and Daniel's relationship. I think it's around 10,000 words. This is an established relationship story, but you can read how they got together in a companion piece that is earlier in the series if you prefer that. Lady of Asheru's writing style is so understated and deft, you just forget that you are reading and get carried away on her seemingly effortless stream of prose. She has such a light touch, and a sense of humor that captures Sam, Teal'c, Jack and Daniel through their dialog and the way they react to situations. She has also thought of some plot twists I have seen nowhere else, including the plot of this particular story. All her work is worth reading if you enjoy Jack/Daniel, and I have reread her work many times. This story was posted back in 2002, which makes her part of the huge and influential "second wave", by my reckoning, of the SG-1 fandom.

Why This Must Be Read:I've been pondering where to start when reccing Jack/Daniel for the first time in years, and I kept circling back to this one. Written in 2006, it's a deeply interior exploration of how Daniel and Jack could have moved their friendship to intimacy, told from Daniel's point of view. It uses the trope of huddling in a tent off-world in a way that seems extremely fresh. Paian, a master of characterization, description and dialog, utilizes Daniel as a rather unreliable narrator and we, the readers, see him make discoveries about himself as he is presented with some extremely surprising discoveries about Jack. I remain totally in love with Paian's characterizations of these two strong and very different men, characterizations which have become definitive for me, but what really sets this fic apart for me is the gorgeous language. I have reread it many times.

Why This Must Be Read: Rodney works as a tutor for Dave Sheppard's children on his estate in the wild frontier. Rodney runs into an incredibly hot "outlaw" in the stables, then out at the lake, and the tension between the two of them is electric. Trying to keep his relationship with John hidden is made all the more difficult by patrols against the repeated attacks by the dangerous outlaws Wraith. Rodney has no idea who John is, and the potential revelation instills in the reader a tension. The plot moves along briskly and the characters are recognizably themselves despite the historical setting. This fic is just so fun and well done - you'll be rooting for John and Rodney's happy ending.
