Why This Must Be Read:

I had a very hard time selecting just one of Lady of Asheru's stories to rec. Please do investigate the link above to all her Jack/Daniel stories, if you enjoy this one. I finally decided on "The Way of the Gods" because it has a charming and fascinating offworld adventure framing her delightful take on Jack and Daniel's relationship. I think it's around 10,000 words. This is an established relationship story, but you can read how they got together in a companion piece that is earlier in the series if you prefer that. Lady of Asheru's writing style is so understated and deft, you just forget that you are reading and get carried away on her seemingly effortless stream of prose. She has such a light touch, and a sense of humor that captures Sam, Teal'c, Jack and Daniel through their dialog and the way they react to situations. She has also thought of some plot twists I have seen nowhere else, including the plot of this particular story. All her work is worth reading if you enjoy Jack/Daniel, and I have reread her work many times. This story was posted back in 2002, which makes her part of the huge and influential "second wave", by my reckoning, of the SG-1 fandom.

Behind the cut is a short bit of this captivating and vividly realized fic.

"Colonel O’Neill, I no longer have my staff weapon," said Teal’c. Daniel automatically checked his pocket, and was surprisingly relieved to feel the cold press of metal. When did I start feeling safer with a gun? he thought.

"Weapons check everyone," said Jack. They went through their packs as Teal’c retraced his path to the gate. After a quick tally, they discovered that only Teal’c’s staff weapon and a zat gun were missing.

"Interesting," said Carter. "I wonder why the Goa’uld technology has been taken, but not our own weapons?"

Jack handed Teal’c a spare pistol. Teal’c’s silence eloquently conveyed that he saw this as inadequate compensation.

"We don’t know that it’s been taken," said Daniel reasonably. "It might have been destroyed by whatever malfunction brought us here, or perhaps filtered out in some way."

Sam looked sceptically at him.

"Hey," said Jack. "Where’s the DHD?"

They all looked round them. There was no DHD to be seen.
