Why this should be read:
A haunting and lovely story by
kellifer_fic written for the 2007
sg1teamficathon. This apocafic story is set in a calm moment between battles. The Season Ten team + Jack O'Neill are camped together on the side of a defeated Cheyenne Mountain planning a way to save the day even when the odds are against them.
Kellifer shifts POV to show the camp from each team member's perspective. The timeline is not consecutive, adding to the appropriate off-kilter feeling of a story taking place at the end of the world, but there are enough physical cues for a reader to know when things are happening.
Her writing has almost a snapshot quality, giving clues and insights on each of the team members and their views about each other. The lightness and camaraderie of SG-1 even in the face of destruction make the story shine. The cliffhanger ending will arrest you.
“What are you reading?” Sam asks, trying to make out the faded lettering on the magazine Vala has balanced on her thighs. They’ve been living like this for two months and if you don’t want to read one of Daniel’s text books that he’d happened to have with him at the time, reading material is a little thin on the ground. They venture into town sometimes but most of the stores and homes are burnt out shells, which is one of the ways the Ori are making sure that no one is still hiding. If they want shelter and food, they’d better be asking for it on their knees and promising devotion at the same time.
“Modern Biker,” Vala says while laying the magazine flat on her belly and raising an eyebrow. “What is the fascination with women in two strips of cloth astride a large machine?”
Sam hears Jack choke on something nearby and smiles. “It’s a guy thing,” she replies but accepts the magazine when Vala offers it. She can just pretend the scantily clad women aren’t there and look at the bikes.
