Why This Must Be Read:
This fic takes "Chimera" on a fork in the road path that once I started, I could not stop reading and haunted me afterwards. M follows a "what if" scenario that Osiris, though unable to beam back onboard her ship, escapes SG-1's trap with Daniel Jackson as a hostage.
The story is told entirely from Osiris's point of view as she forces a mutinous Daniel Jackson to drive cross-country as a secondary escape plan. M uses this unusual narration to make some fascinating revelations about the Goa'uld, Daniel, ascension, the nature of the sarcophagus, and Earth culture.
Osiris is indeed the villainous Goa'uld we know from canon, and M's graphic descriptions capture the violent nature of her/him/it? all too well. (Pronoun gender is always dangerous with Osiris). But Osiris is also painted as vulnerable. An insubordinate host who insists on calling Osiris "Ozzy", a resisting Daniel who will not be cowed, trapped on a planet whose culture is foreign and does not believe in Goa'uld gods--Osiris's own desperation is keenly felt.
Daniel-whumpers will not be disappointed, but I find the story is so much more than that. The dichotomy between Osiris and Sarah is particularly fascinating. M's Sarah has a forceful note with a sense of humor we have not been able to witness. Daniel's characterization flows very naturally in this unnatural (but unfortunately for our dear Dr. Jackson, not unfamiliar) situation. The everyday people they encounter on their journey have a mundaneness that makes the surreal situation very realistic.
As mentioned, there is violence, including a non-con situation (in multiple senses), so sensitive readers may not want to partake, but those that do will not disappointed with this excellently written story.
Osiris is also perched on the hood of the car, drinking coffee as is Daniel Jackson. The human's hands are shaking. It might be caffeine (any god worth a host would know this), or it might be anger. When Osiris took him, Daniel Jackson called out for his teammates through the flames of the burning van, but they did not respond.
There has been no police blockade, either.
"I mean..." Daniel Jackson squints at the map. "There's the World's Largest Coffee Pot in Omaha, of course. And a church entirely made of straw in Arthur county. We could sleep in a Union Pacific caboose in Waterloo. Last but not least, there's the famous UFO water tower of Ogallala. Care to phone home?"
The car is parked some ways from a service station, beyond a small stretch of unkempt grass, a table and two benches. It's too cold for a picnic. There is no one around to see Osiris hit Daniel Jackson in the side, or hear the human cry out.
"You test my patience."
Daniel Jackson huddles over his bruised ribcage. An arm comes up around his waist to protect his body from further punishment. "There's - " cough, "nothing scientific about it."
"You are not driving now."
"But I'll have to, later."
"I could lock you up in the trunk again and drive the car myself."
"Sarah hates to drive."
Daniel Jackson earns an elbow to the face and slides noiselessly off the hood of the car. He is out for the better part of an hour; long enough for Osiris to be bored mindless, all on his own.
You're no prize yourself, partner. Soul mate, buddy of mine, Ozzy old boy.
Note to self: next time, aim a little low.

Date: 2008-01-24 07:23 pm (UTC)I too thought M did a great job making her a real person in this fic and yes to your comments on the other characterizations. This story is one of the reasons I signed up to do the ep related category this month.
Glad you agreed too. :-)
