Why this must be read:
From the beginning, this man had stood by her through thick and thin, risked his life for her countless times. No matter how complicated and trying, he was brilliant and brave and kissing her.
An alternative view of how Elizabeth might have left Atlantis (in this case replace by the IOA) and Rodney's more unusual reaction to the whole state of affairs. But more than that this is a great character study of both characters, with their past relationships meaning that they withdraw from any potential relationships, in Rodney's case this being for the benefit of the person he has feelings for, whilst Elizabeth's reasons are more subsconscious. This is one of those pieces where Rodney is not a complete idiot when it comes to relationships and his insights and own reasons for deciding to come clean about his feelings means that Elizabeth allows herself to get closer to him. Also their kiss is hot, which is reason enough to read this piece :)

"I..." His mouth opened and shut then frowned. "After Carson, I..." He looked down as a flash of pain crossed his blue eyes. Brow creased in consideration, he met her gaze, again. "I promised myself I'd do a better job of telling the people I care about how I feel. But with you still my boss..." A shrug was followed by an uncomfortable smile. "I've made your life difficult enough without dumping something like this on you. Besides, I really didn't want to lose my job." His laugh was singularly awkward.
"You thought I'd fire you if you told me how you felt?"
He nodded then glanced at the railing. "That or you'd get Ronon to throw me off a balcony."
The thought of it made her laugh. "Rodney!"
"Lesser women have done worse," he responded airily.
