Why this must be read:
Stretching lazily, she glanced out the window. The morning grey still reigned in the silent town, though it was the silence that surprised her. The scheduled annual town horse races had been going on for the past several days and to conclude them, there was always a large gathering in the saloon that often lasted well into the next day.
This is the first story of another AU fanfic community I wanted to introduced,

This particular story gives a good basic introduction to the characters so I won't repeat all that, but as well as introducing the characters this particular story paints a really nice picture of a quiet country town and the community that lives there. The writer does such a good job that at the end you'll want to live there and dine at Vala's cafe, knowing that Sheriff Caldwell will keep you safe. The story isn't very long but it's also quiet funny with Laura being her cheeky self and Vala flirting outrageously with Daniel. Plus the idea of John and the other stargate guys tipping their hats and saying ma'am, very hot!
This story is part of an open AU, meaning anyone can post a story, but I can't remember a single bad story that has been posted and everyone has stuck to the basic storyline, so there's no problems with continuity. A chronology of all the stories can be found here
"G'morning, Miss Weir."
She turned around, immediately hoping neither Laura or the man who had just appeared next to her noticed the bright smile she'd stifled the moment she'd heard that voice. "John," she said pleasantly, trying to sound casual. "Good morning."
John Sheppard leaned against the doorway of the store, the smirk she had become very familiar with over the past few years present on his face as he looked at her, his arms folded across his chest. He wore his usual outfit of a white shirt and dark brown vest, as well as matching leggings. Both his gun belt and his hat were also in their normal places at his hip and on his head. Elizabeth felt her cheeks heat up just slightly and her heart quickened.
"Any chance you'd join me for breakfast? I hear Vala's trying a new pancake recipe today."
"Really," she asked faintly, a small smile twitching over her lips. "I hope this one turns out better than the last one she tried. Rodney wasn't happy with the last attempt. He still mentions it and it's been over a month. And Daniel didn't even show up for breakfast that day."
He shrugged negligently. "Well, we won't know unless we're actually at the café, will we?"
It was tempting, really. The saga of Vala Mal Doran, café proprietor, and her determined attempts to woo Daniel Jackson, schoolteacher, had fast become a spectacle for the entire town to watch, prompting people to eat at Vala's little outdoor café even more often than they normally did. Besides, Vala's food was delicious, Rodney McKay's whining about his allergies notwithstanding, and the idea of sharing the meal with John Sheppard made it all the more appealing. They'd eaten at Vala's many times in the few years since they'd met as their friendship had grown.
