Why This Must Be Read: "Stargate Command has an unexpected visitor -- with unexpected consequences for Daniel, Jack and Teal'c," goes the author's summary, and I unknowingly clicked on the link to find a story that captivated me to read on to the very end.
Very few stories of this pairing go beyond the simpler 'create a scenario to get the characters together' PWP, and this story goes beyond that with a plot that sees Jack, Teal'c and Daniel gradually coming together as it progresses. The alien culture introduced through the alien visitor here is doubly fascinating, and the title character Singer, brings a very endearing element to the story. There are jarring moments, but they are few. I was pleasantly surprised when I first encountered this story, and the image of Daniel sitting cross-legged on the floor across from an alien 5-year-old in the gate room trying to bridge a linguistic gap with an apple, cake, milk and assorted items in a basket stayed with me for a while, reminding me of an innocence of first contact not seen on the show since S4.
Snippet from part I:
Smiling widely, now, Daniel rocked back on his bottom, and tried to get more comfortable. "I can't say that either. Looks like I'm going to have to name you, at least until I can find a way to duplicate your sounds. Never thought I was going to need a Ph.D. in music! Sooner or later you're going to learn enough English to understand anything I do name you, so I'd better make it nice. Pretty, even, since you are very pretty to look at. Something musical? An instrument? I don't know of one that sounds like a harp making love to wind chimes with a glockenspiel for accompaniment. After a famous vocalist? Your voice is more beautiful than any human's I've ever heard. Almost like an avatar of Singing. Singer. That's what I'll call you. I dub thee, Singer."
Hands together, he pointed to Singer and said its new name. Oddly, the light and color varied, swirling madly, then gradually settled again. It tried to repeat after Daniel, missed the initial 's' and final 'r' so that a long, musical 'iiinnnnnggggg' sounded. Then with what was a remarkable imitation of Daniel's earlier chuckle, tried again, without his prompting.
"Hello, Singer," he said, feeling giddy and silly. "Pleased to meet you."
