Why This Must Be Read:
Sam is determined to beat Daniel at chess one day, but he manages to wipe the board with her every time. Frustrated, she seeks out advice from her father, Jack, and Teal'c and finally Daniel himself. This story is sweet, with wonderful character details and a fun glimpse into their friendship.
Daniel was doodling absently on that morning’s newspaper, the sudoku already filled in with his neat hand. She had watched him methodically work it out, adding cryptic notations alongside the puzzle as he discarded combinations of numbers. She couldn’t fault his methodology exactly, it was more that she itched to give him some pointers on the mathematical principals behind the number sequences.
She picked the pawn up and advanced it, fingers lingering for a moment on the intricately carved beechwood; reluctant to relinquish control.
Daniel lifted his pen from the coiled spiral that he was inscribing into the hollow space of a letter “O” in the headline, and set it down on the table. He swiftly surmised the changed position of the pawn, and countered by moving his bishop into a patch of no-man’s land on the board.
The Hell? She stared at the encroaching bishop, a thoughtful frown creeping into her expression. She followed all of the diagonal lines radiating out from its position, trying to deduce his intent. She could see no possible advantage to the move he had just made; it went against all logical sense. Do I take the knight? Or does he want me to do that?
