Date: 2004-10-31 12:56 am (UTC)By the way, and this is completely OT, every time I type in humourous (the spelling I've always used up to now) I'm corrected to humorous. That's in both Word - UK English setting and when I doubled checked in my dictionary - also UK English. It's kind of frustrating me. *g*

Date: 2004-10-31 01:29 am (UTC)Interesting... here's what the online OED (http://www.oed.com) has to say about it (in case you're a word nerd like me and care about such things):
For the spelling cf. HONOUR; humour is now usual in Great Britain, humor in U.S. The English formations, humoured, humourless, humoursome, are here spelt like the n. and vb.; but the derivatives formed on a Latin type, as humoral, humorist, humorous, are spelt humor- as in L. humorosus, etc. (This agrees with Johnson's use.) The pronunciation of the initial h is only of recent date, and is sometimes omitted, esp. in the senses under II: see H (the letter).]
Also -- great rec! Thanks. :-)
