Why This Must Be Read: This is a soft, poignant story about Daniel’s first months in foster care. The hurt comfort here is of the emotional kind, but is not overdone as is often the case. It is told in exposition by Daniel to Jack as they mark the anniversary of a pivotal event in foster care for Daniel. The author works the story in slow, wistful terms showing a boy with little hope, a boy learning to cope with the death of his parents. The author gives us a real reason for Daniel’s loner status, why he backs away from relationships and conceals himself in his studies. This story is short but telling. It isn’t horrific, tells no tales about child abuse or anything like that. It only tells the story of a lost little boy and the man he became. It also leaves us with a beautiful understanding of Jack and Daniel as a couple.
