Why This Must Be Read: The Fission of Silence is one of the first stories I read when I came to this fandom, and it left with me a profound and lasting impression. After a period of offworld captivity where he's physically and sexually abused, deprived of the ability to speak, and treated as a "beast," Daniel is returned to the SGC. What unfolds, then, is a story that breaks the traditional mold of hurt/comfort stories and proceeds in a more darkly realistic direction. How much recovery can a person expect to achieve, even a man as amazingly strong and resilient as Daniel Jackson, after this level and kind of hurt? How much comfort are his friends, even though deeply caring, able or willing to provide? This novel-length story is a disturbing and hard read, but it is exceptionally well-written and all the more heartbreaking and real for being so.
