Why This Must Be Read: Jack's Sara stops by his house unexpectedly, one Sunday afternoon, while Jack is out shopping and only Daniel is there. What ensues is an able illustration of the title with people, in the discordance of Sara's presence, that "piece" of Jack's life, there now, and in the difference when she's gone, when it's just Jack and Daniel. Ever the linguist, Daniel translates the people and the world around him here into language he understands and feels. Especially touching and bittersweet is Daniel's wish that his own piece of himself left behind, Sha're, was still alive to share an "unchangeable past."
