Why This Must Be Read: Told from Sam's POV, and with an elegant, natural flow, this is a gorgeous piece about Sam and Daniel shooting the breeze over beers on Jack's deck, with gentle, easy humor and the warmth of friendship. Otter does an excellent job capturing both, but especially Daniel, so vivid on the page in the way he looks and moves, in the way he talks to Sam and to Jack. And very satisfying, and Daniel-like, is the way he brings a needed home-truth to Sam, with just one line and one gesture. Beautiful.
