Why This Must Be Read: This is actually one of the first SG-1 fics I read and I think it's pretty obvious how that turned out. And, uh, it's been a while - did I send feedback on this? God, I hope so. *sighs* Besides the so very compelling image of Daniel in dog tags, this is brilliant Jack P.O.V. There's just a beautiful attention to detail here: Jack's got sharp eyes, but he doesn't always understand the significance of what he's seeing until well after the fact.
Author's Summary: "And it’s that – the way she keeps looking at that ring – that makes Jack long for all the things he’s never going to have again. The obvious trappings, the noticeable markers, that small thrill at seeing someone else’s feelings engraved into something real. He can’t quite bring himself to regret the choices that brought him here, because regret’s useless, can’t change the past, but still, he can feel that want inside. If he’s honest, maybe it feels a bit like need, too."
Excerpt: It’s well into the morning before Jack even notices. It starts with a sharp tug on his chest hair when he leans back in his chair, continues with an itch on his chest that he can’t seem to scratch. By 1000 hours,he’s irritated enough that he spins his chair around, reaches into his shirt, and pulls out his dog tags to discover the name Jackson,Daniel etched into the metal.
