Why This Must Be Read: This story was written for a challenge at Pepe’s Place. The challenge was past lives and this is really an interesting turn for our intrepid heroes. Additionally, the author writes this one tenderly, softly from Jack’s POV. In this story, set in 100AD in Rome, Jack longs to be with Daniel but Daniel has been married to Jack’s sister Octavia (it is an AU right so Sha’re doesn’t exist in this story). In silence they both long for one another but when Daniel acts, Jack denies him. To escape and to prove to Jack he is worthy of Jack’s love, Daniel goes off to fight for Rome. He comes back a year later and this is where the story begins. The effects of war and carnage on Daniel’s psyche are played out well by the author and the emotional trauma Daniel has suffered is poignant and touching. How Jack perceives all of this and relates it is beautiful in its prose. This, I feel, is a different turn of a story for the author. Where she usually writes argumentative Jack and Daniel – here we see something quite different. It’s beautiful and it hurts. Though it is set in another place and time, the emotional difference of Daniel in the early years and now in the later seasons of SG1 plays out well. A good read!
