stargateficrecNote: This is another one of the friendship fics that I promised you. If you're just interested in these two characters as friends and team-mates, this is a great fic to try out if you haven't seen it before. I know combing through pages of shippy stuff in search of those elusive, rare character-centric gen fics is daunting, so here's one of the best that I've read.

Why This Must Be Read: This author rarely writes for the Sheppard/Teyla pairing since she doesn't ship them -- this might actually have been her first serious attempt ever after another author pleaded for a fic. Lemme just say that she does it amazingly well. Rather than depicting them in a romantic or shippy relationship, this is one of trust, deep friendship, and understanding -- she has them nailed as teammates, and this story is a pleasure to read as a result. The ending scene manages to be both incredibly painful and touching when we get to see the characters really depend on each other; really beautiful stuff.
In this fic, Teyla, John, and Rodney have been kidnapped for several months, and in order to stay alive, Teyla is forced to fight in a gladitorial type of sport. The friendships and relationships between the characters are emphasized and played out beautifully on paper -- both John and Rodney get to show some tenderness, which is very sweet. This is also a great read if you're just looking for some great Teyla-ness; she's a hard character for a lot of writers to pin down and a hard one to find fic for, so this is definitely worth a look.
