Why This Must Be Read: Written for the 2006 Jack/Daniel Ficathon. Anyone under the impression that Daniel is angelic, sweet, shy, timid or nice will get an eye-opener in this story. How easy it is to forget what a stubborn, recalcitrant, pushy bastard Daniel can be when he wants his way. Of course Jack's pretty stubborn himself, and could use a bit (read: a lot) of pushing, and Daniel's tired of waiting. There are some terrific Jack moments in the story -- the team leader on guard having to balance his inner dialogue with fulfilling his professional duties. The fic nicely portrays a frustrated Daniel and an exasperated Jack negotiating towards a middle ground, but no easy, pat answers or shiny, wrapped-in-a-bow resolution.

Jane's extraordinary skill with language is at its finest in this one.

Disclosure: I betaed this story, which meant making one tiny note.

Excerpt:
Daniel discarded his pack and vest and waded out, water rainbowing up around him, his arms held out to the side as if he was fighting a strong wind. "It is a statue," he called back, spreading his feet wider and bending over. "Broken, though, not buried."

He was close enough to the shore that Jack could see the dark streaks the kicked-up water had left on the green of his pants, clinging fingermarks, touching Daniel in places Jack's hands had never been, pressing greedily against the hidden skin.

Jack blinked, and punished himself for staring by looking steadfastly at a boring bush for a full thirty seconds. It didn't move, burn, or disgorge a hidden army. Fair enough. Daniel's turn again.

I feel that way every time I beta; a sort of nyer, nyer, I get to read it and all of you have to wai-ait! :-))

I suspect it's why people beta. Oh, they SAY it's to be helpful, or good experience and all that but it's really because we want to get to the fic while it's still toasty-warm ::g::

And you are just making me glow here from blushing and smiling; thank you!
