samcarterfic a thon.
Request details: It's canon from "Prodigy" that Sam won every award, presumably science awards anyway, while at the Air Force Academy. Write about some aspect of her time there or training that perhaps didn't go quite as smoothly - a particular classmate or teacher she didn't get along with, something that was a physical challenge to her, etc. Please no: eating disorders, sophomoric or gross humor, or Sam portrayed as totally perfect and loved by everyone (which would defeat the purpose of the general scenario - I want her to have a real challenge at something!)
Why This Must Be Read: This is a must read for any true Sam fan. It gives a wonderful look into the character and drive that made Sam what she is today. It shows an inciteful look at the hardships she faced as a woman in the military, the daughter of a general, and overall hot-shot. It's a glimpse into the Sam that we can only speculate about from the chip on her shoulder in CotG and her development since then. Reaching Past the Sky is great because not only does it do all of this but it ties in the real events of the disaster of the space shuttle Challenger and the subsequent shut down of the space program and the impact that those events played on Sam and the path her career would take.
Excerpt:
The next rock flew its perfect crash course equally silently.
So did the next. And the next.
When she threw two together upwards they arced apart, mimicking the smoke trails that had ended seven lives and her hopes and plans.
She disgusted herself. Seven lives lost, millions if not billions of dollars of research down the drain, dozens of careers--or more--in the balance, the whole future of the program Sam had idolized her whole life in peril, and she was sulking about childhood daydreams.
Perspective. That was what she needed.

Date: 2006-08-30 04:50 am (UTC)There's lots of gems there, though, isn't there?
I randomly chose the first fic you posted. Oh, the "Prodigy" one. Nice. :-D Excellent choice. I don't usually like pre-canon characters, but I really enjoyed reading this one.

Date: 2006-08-30 10:26 pm (UTC)And I've been dying for this one to come out, cause I kinda beta'd it and loved it. Was hoping it would be posted before the month was up.
I wasn't TRYING to do it all from the ficathon, but there are a lot of great ones... and more recent good Sam fic is kind of hard to find.
:-)
