Rec Category: Slash
Pairing: John Sheppard/Rodney McKay, Rodney McKay/Other, various minor pairings
Category: Slash, Atlantis, future-fic
Warning: Slash (this is a no-brainer, considering the category), character death, spoilers for Season II up to The Tower
Author on LJ:
leahwoof
Link: The Body Holographic
Summary: "I would give anything for you to be real."
Why This Must Be Read:
This long fic (60,000 words) takes a look at one of many possible futures for Atlantis. It's the sequel to the much shorter Left to Fend, but I think it stands beautifully on its own.
In a series of timeline-jumping vignettes, Leah and Springwoof tell the story of Atlantis if Earth abandoned it after The Tower. Remember how SGA is supposed to be a science-fiction show? Well, this is sci-fi writing at its best, using technology to deal with painfully human issues of identity, love, and loss. Slash doesn't have to be just about sex (though don't worry, I plan on reccing plenty of sex this month too), and this story is full of thoughtful plot.
I'm reccing it not only because it's great sci-fi, because I found it emotionally resonant in a way that very few other stories can match. This one will leave you emotionally wrung out. I will admit that I have a soft-spot for Rodney, and especially for well-written Rodney. Here, he is lovely and touching and ultimately a survivor. By turns happy and heart-wrenching, this story really is a must-read, and I do not say that lightly. Go! Read!
