Why This Must Be Read:
After looking through fic after fic of poor, helpless civilian Daniel, this story was a welcome change. Taking place during the events of "Prodigy", Daniel decides to join the reformed SG-11 to break both their curse and his as a bad luck charm. Of course, trouble ensues.
ETS works within several fandom assumptions, including Jack's supposed unofficial briefing for any team leader that borrows SG-1's archeologist, but she also twists those assumptions. Daniel has been shown in canon to be competent with a weapon, and more aware of things then he sometimes lets on. This fic allows for a more proactive Daniel as he ends up being the rescuer of his temporary teammates, without turning him into a Rambo ActionJackson.
"Breaking the Curse" does not go beyond the limits of Daniel's character. He is mainly the historian and cultural expert. As he tells Hammond in a semi-prepared speech that makes him sound like Bones McCoy/Carson Beckett, "he's the archeologist!" (This ends up being a nice humorous, not annoying effect). He shows his vulnerabilities and hides them in a very Daniel-esque way. Daniel works within human, not superhuman limits to help SG-11 in a "plausible" scenario (if we can use the word plausible to describe a Science Fiction story). After seeing story after story where the fanon stereotype of "poor civilian Daniel" as the Damsel in Distress, needing protection by his military teammates, this Daniel may prove a breath of fresh air.
Fair warning: there are a few "Danny's" by Jack scattered at the end of the fic, but as someone who cringes at those myself, this fic is still well worth the read.
ETA: LINK ISSUE Apparently stargatefan is down today. Rats. Sorry all, I've tried to google for another archive for the fic but come up empty. It was working last week. Hopefully this is only a temporary setback, but I've heard the site owner has had some health issues. :-(
I'll try and find another Daniel story to make up for the bad linked one. Again my apologies.
ETA2: ALTERNATE LINK Thanks to
emeraldbound, a good link for the story can be found at the stargate novels archive, and I've provided the link above. Thanks emeraldbound! And hope y'all enjoy reading, and thanks for your patience.
